We've seen videos, hunting shows & real life elk encounters, what is the # 1 reason BULLS BUGLE? There's lots of reasons why they bugle but one thing takes precedence above all others. Understand this & your elk success of killing them will escalate, why, because you'll see & understand not just one thing or sound applies to all encounters!

Many flavor of bugles can be labeled as advertisement. He can be advertising himself as the dominant bull, advertising his location and asking other elk to respond, or advertising that he is worthy of cows.

Just my 2-cents.

There are many types of bugles with many different meanings. Locator, advertizing, challenge, gathering, just to name a few. But when you put it all in a nut shell, it all comes out with one word. Testosterone!

I agree with WW that testosterone is at the core of bulls bugling, but to say that is their reason, is like saying bulls bugle because they are bulls. John F. is correct in writing that a lot of the bugles listed above can be categorized as advertising.

You betcha! Yes, Advertisement can be shown in various forms & during certain encounters. If you hear bugling action going on late Aug. - Sept. - Oct. your odds are very good that bulls are announcing who they are in an effort to be chosen as "breeders" by the cows within earshot! This can really play a part in how to approach such encounters. At this time a "Breeding Sequence" by us hunters can prove very effective but your odds are 5% it will net the herd bull, take things like this into consideration! If you want the herd bull it will require aggressive action whether it be through calling or ambushing!
