Calling improvements

Which aspect of calling do you need to improve upon? For me 1 area is definitely learning to be an "emotional" caller. I seem to have it while hunting but practicing emotion is hard for me.

All of it. I am never happy with all the different sounds, therefore I practice all the time trying different things to sound better and become more proficient.

I believe the greatest need of many hunters is to know when to stay quiet and wait. There is a time to be aggressive, but there is also a time for patience. It seems easier to get up and move to another spot to call from, that to wait and see what shows up. Waiting 45+ minutes when we do not see or hear something right away seems like forever to many hunters.

What you want to remember is Tone, intensity and pitch. Think about which scenario you are trying to sell to the elk and then use the appropriate Tone, Intensity and Pitch. That is how you put Emotion in your calling.

makes sense GC. i think what seperates callers in the elkwoods is the realism that the emotion brings to the sounds. alot of times i'm sure thats what convinces a bull that this is "real" and he commits.

I think you nailed it David. Elk can't talk like we can and they don't think like we do. instead of thinking, they react. So emotion is very important. In a nut shell, you need the proper emotion to cause reaction in a given situation. And that is pretty much what Troy was getting at in his post above. Just a little different way of explaining it!

Some of the most effective close-in "calls" are made with sticks, rocks, logs, grass.

I think the biggest improvement most callers need to make, as Swede notes, is when to shut up and be patient. Also when to be soft and subtle. Anyone who has spent much time hanging out close to elk herds can tell you there are far more soft little noises made than LOUD calls to each other, even by bulls.
