I know of a OTC place to hunt elk....

Postby cnelk » 05 15, 2013 •  [Post 1]

The main piece of gear required is a small boat with an outboard motor.
The area has a good track record and you wont have much company

Anyone interested, let me know

cnelk,
If the draw doesn't go as planned.....I may be very interested.

I will definitely be searching for OTC info if the pins do not fall my way.

I could rent a dang boat !

A few years ago I was in a mountain town one evening getting some supplies for camp.
Got thirsty and went to whet my whistle at a tavern.
In there, I met these NR guys that were heading out as they were all done hunting.
We went out to look at the 4 racks and I was floored that they had aluminum boat under their gear on a trailer.
They were pretty tight lipped about where they had been hunting, I had an idea where, but didnt let on.
They hauled a boat and gear 1000+ miles and hunted out of tree stands....

And I know where...

we put in for just a preffrence point and getting an OTC tag. we are actually leaning toward hunting the zirkel wilderness. dont know where this lake or river is that you need to cross, but we got boats thats just a long way to drag them from ol North Carolina

Sounds like there is some interest!
[Sorry, but I wont ever post a specific GMU on any forum]

The Colorado elk draw takes place tomorrow morning. Once that is over I guess we will have to figure out who really wants to try this spot and how to not get a bunch of guys in there.

Ideas on how to do this?

Put the names on a paper plate with sections drawn like a cut pizza or pie. Fasten it to your archery target with a nail in the center. Have someone spin the plate and step back to safety as you shoot an arrow at the plate. The lucky one to get a hole punched in their section wins. Sounds creative to me.

i'd love the intel. just so you know, my inner circle: we can keep a secret. the location would die with us.

elknut gave me a spot last year..we have told nobody.

How about this?

After the Colorado elk draw results are all posted, any one interested in knowing the locale will have to send a PM to me and Swede, giving several reasons why you should be chosen.

We will then review them and make a choice.

Thoughts?

cnelk- If it's so good of a spot why aren't you going to hunt it? Just curious. Where I come from we don't give up any spots. Had too many places get overrun by sharing them. Maybe I'm just a selfish jerk......let me re phrase that.....I am a selfish jerk:)

Its easy to give away a spot when its not yours.

So this has come to what is essentially an essay contest for you to give someone a spot to hunt on public ground?

Postby cnelk » 05 16, 2013 •  [Post 21]

Let me clarify.

The state of Colorado is loaded with places to hunt elk. The trick is finding them.
The place in reference is a good one.
And its not ANYONE'S spot, mine or others. All public land.
Its a spot that should get hunted. and it would be a fun experience for a couple guys

Why dont I hunt it?
Why should I?
I have over 100 sq miles that I know like the back of my hand. And Im always expanding

As far as the essay. It was just an idea.

I have helped lots of guys shoot their first elk. And I will continue to help others get into elk.

I havent seen anyone else on here offer any spots...

Anyone else want to ante up?
Or maybe this thread should go away?

Once again,
Thoughts?

I know cnelk is doing this out of the kindness of his heart. He loves to get people on elk but doesn't just want anyone to hunt his spot. Especially someone who will likely turn around and share it with everyone else. Nobody is asking for permission to hunt public property. What they are asking for is cnelk to share his spot. A spot that he's spent blood, sweat, and tears to find.

I commend you on your willingness to share with someone else. Thank you!

I help guys every year and, though I find this method a bit dramatic, I will "ante up". I am a scout junky and also very knowledgeable when it comes to otc elk units and their potential here in Colorado. I,much like cnelk, don't plan on chaning my spot and so I love to find good areas for others or for weekend trips to fill a list C cow tag. Anyway, if a NR needs help finding a spot or just needs one scouted I'd be glad to help. Post here or pm.

Thanks for replying otcwill!
Thats how I got to know many areas too, by just going and looking

I guess if anyone is interested in the boat place, the first one to PM me with a pic of your boat that is intended to be used, gets the info.
It should be one that can hold the gear for 2-3 guys, dependable able to be beached and left as you go set up camp and hunt

If this is interesting to you, let me know

John : didn't you mean blood sweat and Beers instead of tears? Sometimes it just pays to talk to guys in the local bar! LOL! I know of a similar place. But you would have to be dropped in via helicopter!

I would love to hunt this spot, but to be honest I would take any tips on places in that area. We are planning on doing a wilderness hunt and looking into Zirkel as our #1 choice, we just put in for a point (big total of 2 now) and hunting OTC. I have called out and spoke with a few people (biologist, wildlife officers) got a little helpful info but nothing great. We have looked at google earth until it feels like I'm cross eyed but nothing beats actually being on the ground, kinda hard to do from North Carolina though

I know where it is and I ain't sayin' because after this year's Unit 2 hunt I may be going in there too. But I know of two other similar spots which require creativity and some light boating to reach, where there are some big bulls that die of old age. Ain't saying where they are either, except maybe to Brad, becase I know he won't hunt there, LOL!

I archery DIY solo each year the past few years in NM the San Pedro Wilderness by walking in; am retired on a limited incomed and would welcome any direction to a hot spot. My email is smallbizok@gmail.com; i live in Oklahoma. And i would be a confidant of your generosity as to location.
Thanks in advance,

What areas are y'all able to scout? My uncle usually goes up a month early and scouts for us but it looks like he may have to work this year so I'm down a hunting partner and my main scout. I'm looking at OTC around rifle or left over tags for unit 54. We either hunt 2 to 3 nights with camp on our back or hunt off of mules what ever works best for the area. Any info is appreciated.

Figured I'd post a pic of my boat being used to kill critters. In case someone backs out on the previous info that would be a cool elk trip. Kinda like Alaska

BarW, let me know when ya get the leftover list and I should be able to take a look around for ya. 54 would be a bit of a trek for me but I could at least tell ya what I know of the unit and might be able to make a stop there on my way to scout G5 for another very lucky NR
