Be nice to me please! Who uses the Hoochie Mama?

I admit, I've called in elk with them. They can be a great tool when used properly. Here's how I use them.

In a cold call setup, one in each hand dialed into a different tones. Combined with my mouth reed and external cow call I can sound like "many" different elk by muffling and pointing. Getting four calls going at once, I can also walk them over each other to make it sound like an excited elk herd. If you think about it, when a herd gets excited the cows don't wait for each other to finish before they mew or chirp. They talk over each other.

Don't just squeeze them for the sake of hearing the sound. Learn the elk language and habits, then use the Hoochie in your favor. And remember, an excited herd environment might just give a curious elk the extra nudge it needs to come running in.

Run for cover! He said the ******* **** word They aren't as bad as folks let them on to be. I know a couple of cats that do the same thing as you, work them into their calling sequences to simulate various cow sounds.. Not a bad idea at all. That said, when squeezed alone, they certainly make a distinctive sound (not bad) but distinctive. Curious to hear what other hunters chime in with.

So much depends on the country ones hunt & their abuse by other hunters? It's an OK call when used as an additional cow in a blind/cold calling setup or stopping an elk at the shot. Sure most of us prefer reeds but the hoochie mama can be used effectively when it's not a hunters goto call in every situation.

I suppose I am like everyone else that elk hunts. I have a Hoochie Moma elk call. It is very rare that I use it. It just seems when I consider what I want in my day pack, there is just not enough room for the H.M. call.

yup. we did.

got my bull on my rookie year in NM with the HM call. i was an idiot and didnt practice any calling. i had just landed my job and was in job-mode. the hunt just came on..i had to pack and go. i did bring mouth calls.

my brother on the other side of the spectrum..attended elk seminars. he got friendly with Ralph Ramos, our local elk guru. he is with the other forbidden word (primos). i think ralph gave him a few hoochie mama.

i took out a mouth call and let out the worst noise you have ever heard. my brother prompty handed me a hoochie.

that hoochie called in my bull and my brothers bull the very next morning. i was walking around the woods cow calling, listening for the bull..when he zigged, i zagged..i kept my brother in between us and walked the bull right up my brothers shooting lane..BOOM! it was done.

granted we hiked UP to an area the game biologist said we were insane to try. unit 36 in NM..glad we got it done in two days. my legs were gassed.

we were in an area that the bulls do not hear the hoochie day in and day out..(i think)

i was gonna buy one last year just as a secondary call but heard so many guys on here goin off on em i decided it wasnt worth the heat, lol. so i think we need a new adminstrator now . just kiddin, im sure they work at certain times, but i dont want the same thing anybody drivin thru a walmart can grab.

Nope, threw mine away. They are just too dangerous! First year we had a 5 pt nearly run us over. Last year, 3 cows and a calf about stomped me into the dirt! I gotta get a safer call...

I never did understand why the Hoochie Mamma was so popular in the first place. I suppose you could chalk it up to good marketing aimed at the hunter who can't make a diaphram work well. And I hve seen them used in competition calling to imulate herd talk as John suggested.

JMHO, but the H S Squeeze Me sounds basically the same as the Hoochie and you don't have that little hole in the top that you have to cover in order to make it work or worry about water getting into it and ruining the call.

Personally, I'm not a fan of either call. But I will say this. If you depress the bulb verry slowly without making any sound until you feel the little plunger in it, then rapidly work that plunger, you do have a pretty dang good squirrel call. No fool'n, give it a try!

i put them in the category of the push button yelpers for turkey hunting. guys picked those things up and made a "turkey" sound with them just by pushin a button. it was easy to get something to sound similar to a turkey so guys bought them. they are not good turkey callers and are very limited on what they can do, but given the right circumstances you an kill something with them.

I have one I can't believe some of these comments it is one of the most effective calls I've used!! mostly if my buddy is on an escape route I go in the canyon a few squawks on it and in five min my buddy radios me he has one down.lol ok not quite that bad I have used them if solo to make herd talk but usually have a buddy that we just go back and forth. It may have its place but man I can hear them about the 15 of August as everyone drives the roads pushing them every 100 yards "doing their scouting" it just took the effectiveness out of using them

In fact, from what I'm hearing, it might sound a tad better than the Hoochie Mama.

Perhaps a demonstration of of this technique would be helpfull for the audience. Audio only though... I believe I speak for everyone when I say "no video necessary" of this unusual calling method.

People keep giving them to me for gifts and I keep giving them away for door prizes, raffles, etc..

Nothing like watching a herd of cows all pick up their heads at once, look at each other, and start running in the opposite direction.

I'm thinking a good tactic might be to visit the camps on the other side of the mountain and present them all with a HM as a little token, you know, of good luck..
