Question from a newbie or veteran?

Postby JohnFitzgerald » 04 18, 2013 •  [Post 1]

How about an elk calling question from a new or veteran hunter? Come on, don't be shy. I'm sure if you have a question many others will have the same one. Help them out by asking it!

How do you know IF you should make a move on a Bull?

IF . . . you Do make a move, when do you go and how close do you try to get?

I know all of this depends on a lot of variables. Maybe some of you pros could paint us a few pictures and IF you should Move, When and How Close?

If you make a move at the wrong time, you will wind up nose to nose with a bull as you both round a bend. If you wait, you will spend an entire morning calling to a bull that has no interest of getting out of bed.

And Go . . . .

How (specific sound to use) and when is it prudent to call elk from a tree stand?

I have a feeling theres gonna be more newbs(relatively) on this string but i'll give it a shot.
Two years ago we hunted the 2nd week of september and got on a big herd of 40 cows and maybe 4 satellites. Tons of bugling and cow talking (it may have helped that I was making herd sounds?). Last year, same week, came up on smaller herds with almost no focalization. Did hear a couple lone bulls sounding off( at least that's what it sounded like) in the evenings. It was just really weird to come up on herds that were dead silent. What's up with that?
