Who shoots first?

This question is for you guys that hunt with buddies, as I see many refer to your elk hunts as 'WE'

Who gets to shoot first? Who is designated caller?
Do you switch it up?

What is the decision making process?

I hope this doesnt come out as an arrogant AH.

If I hunted with another and he had less experience than I, He would be the shooter. It is simply because when it gets down to making the final play and making the score there is lass chance for him to mess up the whole deal. A newer guy can focus on making the shot and being still. And ...it would be cool to help someone get their elk!!!!

one the other hand, if were hunting with any of the esteemed elk studs on this site all of which are more experienced than I, then we will do a paper, rock, scissors match.

I'm usually the caller. Gets a little frustrating at times.

Rock Scissors Paper, flip a coin, or what ever works. But I hunt solo and that solves the problem. LOL!

I always give my ol' man first crack, he went years giving me first shot. Now I figure it's his turn. I always give him the best spots, I figure I'll still being doing this long after he's gone so my time will come, till then "choot'em dad choot'em"......

when i turkey hunted every year everybody else always got to shoot first. i figured i tdid all the real work, the rest was just pulling the trigger. now if im elk huntin and i have never killed on thats a different story.

My brother and I flip flop through out the day. There are times though when one of us will get shooter turns back to back depending on how we're feeling about a situation.

When I filmed a group of 4 hunters in Colorado last fall, depending on the situation, they would take turns on being the lead shot while the other 3 called.

Other times, they would all call together, spread out and whoever had the shot, would take it.

I ended up naming them the wolf pack because the way they hunted and read off of each other was like a pack of wolves hunting their prey.

I'll be filming more groups of hunters this fall so it will be interesting to see how other groups hunt elk together.

Like Johnfitz stated, 90% caller when not hunting solo and can be frustrating at times. The one cool thing I know is that I can always find and call in elk by myself for myself.

Who will be the shooter . . . last year I called in my buddies first elk . . . so this year . . . . ME!!! I still haven't put one on the ground, I will this year.

Rock paper scissors to start, then alternate after that.

Last guy to have put an elk on the ground going into the current Season is the caller.

But we switch it up after each encounter, successful or unsuccessful.

my hunting partner called for me last yr. i havent shot an elk yet so he wanted to try and get me my first, plus he wanted to give me some calling lessons as well.

when hunting with my son though im the caller hes the shooter. trying to put his first elk in front of him. if im with a friend from work its up to a coin toss

I'm always the caller. Been that way no matter the quarry: ducks, geese, turkeys, elk etc. I've always been the assist man.

To me it doesn't matter, called for a first timer last year and would have been happy if he didn't get cow fever but it happens. Now I have also hunted with a few that I think if I didn't let them get first crack would have tried to knock me down so they would have it. I preferhunting with like minded people that don't care who goes first but are just happy with group success.
