Love Calling for Others

How many of you have a hunting buddy that's a really good caller? Does he/she do most of the calling? Do you ever catch yourself saying, "He/she is just too darn good for me to do the calling!" Remember, these good callers have spent hours practicing in the off season to help you harvest your elk. Most probably never complain about how much calling and how little shooting they do. Please, compliment them by spending an equal amount of time in the off season practicing.

Good point John. I hunt alone until I get an animal. After that if someone wants a caller, I enjoy going out with them. Usually all I have with me, except for my calls, is my day pack. The only thing in it worth thinking about is my lunch. Good times are had by hunting like that.

Story of my life... but not in a bad way. I enjoy calling but have not hunted with somebody who spends the time I do practicing.. It may be the end of my 26 year marriage soon

My primary hunting partner is a "decent" caller, he can bring elk in for the most part but tends to lack the aggression needed to get the bulls to really commit. My other hunting partner is new to elk hunting, he wants to be a good elk caller but he doesn't put the time in to be a good one. I have one other friend who I think is a modestly "ok" caller at best - his sounds certainly don't sound that beautiful or clean - but his sense for knowing what sounds to make at the right time is literally second to none. That guy calls in more bulls than you could shake a stick at. Master of the right call at the right time - reads the situation like you wouldn't believe. I do 95% of the calling when I'm out, unless I'm with the guy who calls OK but knows what to say and when to say it - he loves to be the caller, and I'm more than ok with that given his ability to bring them in. I always try to get my elk shot as early as I can so I can leave my phone on and take calls from people who need a caller - I LOVE calling for others.

I have been the main caller for our group. All the others can make cow sounds, but they have left it up to me to do most of the calling. I also do most of my hunting alone until I fill my tag and then turn into the full time guide and caller. I really enjoy calling for others and have called in a lot of elk for new friends for there first elk. The only downside of hunting alone and calling is that a lot of the bulls come straight in and only present a frontal shot that I usually pass on. When I first started calling, reeds were not so popular except for a few turkey callers using them. Pieces of Vacuum cleaner hoses and bent tubing were the main tools for calling. We were pretty bad back then but elk responded to just about anything before calling became so popular. My 1st 5 bulls I chuckled in by just making sounds with my throat and a short piece of vacuum hose. Larry Jones put a cassette tape out about that same time. Trying to keep from coughing and sucking in bugs were our main concern. The strange part is, I have taken 27 elk with a bow and not one of them were called in for me by someone else.

I enjoy calling for others as well, I receive more enjoyment from this than for myself. I do happen to have a very good hunting partner that's an excellent caller, my son. We share shooter/caller every year.

I have spent a lot of time calling for others and it is enjoyable but it would be fun to hunt with someone who also practiced calling a fair bit….someday…
