Out of desperation what have you tried and it worked,.. or didnt

I was caught in the open with a short wyoming sagebrush for my backdrop. the 5 bulls would look my direction but werent very interested in the cows that could be around the hill (me) for 45 minutes the herd slowly feed away .
A few bugles and more time, hardly a head raised,
Out of frustration I tried to rake the sage behind me,..to small to do much of anything
I smacked my bugle on the ground and bull came running

I don't remember ever getting desperate at hunting. The day goes dark and I get ready for another hunt. The sun sets over the hills on the last day and I go in and fix dinner. The next morning I drag up my equipment, thank the Lord for the hunt, pile in the truck and head home. There is always next year. I suppose that too will end, but I don't expect that to be a moment of desperation either. Just another, "Thank you Lord. Keep me in your care, I'm headed home."

One morning, just as it was getting lite enough to see, I was heading down into a valley that I had some success in before. As I popped over the ridge there were two spike bulls standing in a little meadow that I needed to get across to get to where I was headed. I squatted down as soon as I saw them hoping they would move out so I could cross the meadow without spooking them. After what seemed like a very long time, they were still there. So I cut a stick about 3 feet long. I draped an old gunny sack over the stick and held it straight out behind me about waist high. With the other hand I held my bow cross ways on top of my head and slowly stood up.

I started walking down the hill towards them. As I entered the meadow they were in, I was no more than 60 yards from them, maybe even closer. I swear, they both never even finched . They just raised their heads and watched as I crossed the open meadow. It was hard to keep from laughing and I'll bet they thought I was the strangest looking elk they had ever seen.

I'll bet you are all wondering where I came up with that old burlap bag out there in the middle of nowhere. But that in itself is a whole nother story!! I swear, if I wasn't a bowhunter, I'd be plumb ashamed of myself for some of the crazy things I have tried.

I agree with Shoe, what's "the rest of the story" This could be a poll with a prize offered. In addition to what Shoe offered, perhaps:

Heavy duty anti-bug head net?
Cannibas carrier aquired from a local growing operation?
Forgot butt wipe so you were gonna use it as industrial strenth TP?
Poor man's water filtration system?
Trout throw net for small stream?

Jeff and cnelk both nailed it. Elknut knows the story as well. And it does work when used right. But this year I have upgraded to one of Jeff's slip covers.

Phantom and White Shoe are a couple of real quick thinkers. When I read their answers I just about ruined my keyboard when I spit my ice tea out. LOL!!

I was thinking Da White Shoe hit it with his guess that WW was hunting with a homely girl. If she would not wear the sack just to reduce your eye strain, I was going to recommend you tell her it is a face cover so the game doesn't recognize you. Now I read the WW is wearing it to disguise himself. What next?

If you've ever met WW, you'd understand that in his younger days women may have asked HIM to wear the bag over his head ..

Speaking of desperation, once when the season was winding down I was on a good bull and his cows but he paid no attention to my calls. The herd walked over a ridge into some timber, so I started trotting toward them, giving out frantic lost calf calls. Just before cresting the sharp ridge I put an arrow on the string (Yeah, I know, safety cops, but I did it anyway). As I dropped over I found myself in the middle of the herd in the timber. Like IN THE MIDDLE. They were waiting for the straggler to catch up. They were so startled they looked around at each other, but before they ran off I drew and shot the herd bull at 6 yards. He fell over seconds later

My hunting partner watched me run toward them, thinking it was another of my stupid stunts. I walked back over the ridge and to him, where he was just opening a candy bar. The whole episode took maybe two minutes, max, from the time I left until I walked back into sight. "Did you see 'em," he said, laughing, as he'd heard the herd run off.

"I killed him," I replied. "Yeah, sure." "No, really, he's laying dead on that little bench." He finished off the Snickers and I led him to the bull, his head shaking the whole way.
