lol..what sucks was last year, I decided to use my land owner tag for the December hunt, and ended up guiding instead...in 2010, i traded two of my tags for a tag northeast of Taos, and killed a nice bull Christamas day...
My tags are for unit 2, a sleeper unit were 360" bulls and 380" bulls are being killed now, with a few 390" bulls being killed. We get the bulls as they migrate out of The banded Peak Ranchs in sw Colorado, and off the jicarilla reservation. 28,000 acres, two ranchs combined, plus the 3200 Gomez ranch....fun hunt in December...

yep applied and the snow is melting early here. pretty mellow winter and saw lots of calves last year. should be alot of animals once again.

Since they automated the system they moved the deadline up about a week, it used to be at the end of March or beginning of April.

The good thing about the automation is the draw result are up a lot faster. They did not announce the results until June before, now its at the end of April.

Another plus is if you pay with a credit card they credit your card directly if you are not drawn, instead of sending you a check in the mail. That makes it easier to put in for more hunts. I carry the balance on the credit card and pay the down the amount of my application fees, this way I just pay the interest for about a month and a half on the balance on those hunts in which I am not drawn. The following month I pay off the balance for the hunts for which I am drawn.

Yessir, no preference points, just plan ole luck. Be careful bout appling for third or fourth choice hunts. The way the draw goes is when your name is drawn, they look at your first choice, if its filled, youre thrown back in to be drawn for your second choice...you keep coming up and choices checked to see if filled...I never apply for third or fourth choices, cause those are usually hunts that wont have opnings when your time comes up.

Anyone have any advice on antelope in New Mexico? If someone could message me with any pointers that would be great. Never applied in New Mexico for antelope and not sure where to start. Thank you. Michael

No, no this is NOT true! Their application is a little weird in that whenever your application is pulled (if you are lucky enough) they just march through your order. Because of that, the hardest apart about the system is just getting your application drawn. Once it is pulled you must capitalize. Therefore, I believe you must put the "dreamiest" hunt on your list in the first slot in case you do get drawn. To not do so will be make you miss your chance if you get pulled early and some nice hunts are still available.

For example, if you put your dream, high demand hunt 3rd and a late cow hunt first you are guaranteeing that you will not get your dream hunt even if you are the first app drawn. Talk about a missed opportunity! That said, be realistic about your dream hunt's odds of still being open. I say shoot for a top hunt, just maybe not THE top hunt, in the first slot.

In my case, as a rookie hunter for ELK here, my top slot is a nice cow hunt, followed by late cow hunts. I just want to hunt this year.

That's right on, on how the draw works, I got my Third Choice two years ago, First Choice three years ago, so I'm like 2 for 16 or something like that.

Yep put in again but have never drawn a N.M Elk tag maybe this is the year.
