Another new ElkNut!!

Hello to all ElkNuts! My recent elk research brought me to the world of ElkNut.Finally!! I almost feel like I'm late to the party. With only 1 elk hunt in my past, I won't have a lot to offer in some forums, but I will try to be informative and helpful when I can. I am planning a MT archery elk hunt this September and trying to gain as much info as possible. Extremely excited to find the site and become a member. I just placed my first order for The Playbook and Sounds by the Elk and Scouting Elk Country DVD, and I'm pretty sure there will be more to come.

Welcome BMF11 to our base camp here. It is good to have new voices around the campfire. Tell us about your first elk hunt. Did you get an animal or have a great experience?

Thanks for the welcome mat Swede! My first Elk hunt was 4 1/2 yrs ago in CO. It was a GREAT experience! Neither of us harvested an elk, but coming from MN, ND area it was successful just to be in the elk woods. The main thing learned from that hunt was that research is a main key. Although we did see a few elk on our side of the fence, we found that we were hunting next to a private ranch loaded with the rut crazed animals! What a ritual to witness. We applied for the MT Breaks for 1st choice this time around, but have been also researching most of all the MT general units as well. Can't wait for the draw results to figure out our destination. I was referred to this site from someone who became an ElkNut last year before his hunt and he said If I wanted to be successful this was a great place with great products to help the process.

Thanks everyone! RockChucker30, we will be doing a September archery hunt in Montana. Depending on the exact area we decide upon and mainly hunting pressure, we will have a base camp and bivy style hunt at our disposal. Whatever we can do to find a place AWAY from a large number of hunters. Hard to know what an area will be like with hunting pressure until you get there I guess. Enjoyed your 2012 elk hunt story and pics. Thanks, it adds fuel to the fire!

If you want to get away from other hunters it's not as hard as some make it out to be. Bivvy in, and choose country that has elk but that the locals refer to as "rugged", "steep", or "nasty". Then spend the summer getting in REALLY good shape.

Cool thing about elk hunting is that you really can outwork other hunters. You just have to be in good enough shape to do it.

As you can see, I'm pretty new here too.
Since we all share a big part of each year in common, it makes it easy for an ElkNut to fit in.

If your plans this September are in my neck of the woods give me a holler.
As for a lack of experience, I hope I never stop learning...
