OK friends, here is part 3 of our 2013 Elknut Forum post em up threads.. This one is bugles with chuckles. Everyone like to bugle and chuckle, right Post up your bugles with chuckles for the good folk of this forum to hear and perhaps, get some feedback on. I know these threads have helped me over the past few years. As always, feel free to post your noises on this thread or any of the earlier ones.. I mean really, where else can you throw out your elk noise practice sessions and get postive feedback from some pretty darn accomplished wapiti hunters. This is like free karate lessons ... Let's hear em. Please feel free to comment on mine also... very rusty (I can't afford karate lessons..hee hee).. RJ

Hey, I'll buy that! The only thing I see that is a little different from what the real bulls do around here is that the bulls bugle is a little shriller or higher pitched when calling cows with bugles. But you have to take into consideration that most of the bulls I hunt are younger. A four year old bull is a rareity in my neck of the woods. They never get a chance to grow up before someone takes them out. Great chuckles you have there!!

Can you try that a little further from the recording device? Maybe 20'? It's hard for me to get an idea what it really sounds like. Also, maybe try to slow them down a little bit and only chuckle 5-6 times tops. I'm curious what that would sound like.

I just throw a small puff of air into the tube at the end of each diaphram squeak.. kind of like a "puh or pah" noise at the end.

Yikes.. those are some great sounds Conlan! Those chuckles are off the scale.. Really like how you limit the quantity of them which is something I need to work on. I tend to string out way too many of them in many situations.

Thanks for the props Paul. I appreciate it. My calling improvement over the past few years is due in no small part to these threads, you, WW, gselkhunter, and that dang Conlan making me practice and getting outside of my comfort zone.

I think all that have been posted up on this thread so far souund very good. MSD1228's calling has such a realistic tone.. something to emulate.

Keep em coming. This is the place, and, the time of year to do it.

mandrroofing, your cow calling is excellent, I really enjoyed them. Your bugle was so so, a little more believable tone needed there, I'd like to see you lengthen it out for another 1/2 second. Just for grins start out with a higher note instead of the low growl & finish off like normal. Your chuckles need to have a slight more thump to each one & slowed down just a smidgen. Let's hear another!

Thanks RJ, I switched my reeds over to Glacier Country calls I really like the tone and versatility. I have tried alot of others over the past number of years. I think they hit it on the nail.

This is my 10 year old son. He did a couple of different bugles and some grunts not really chuckles. He also was using a Blue Blaster.

Craig, your Bugle with Grunts is top shelf! I agree on your chuckles that they could use a little more rapidness to them & on a lower volume. Chuckles are not as loud & intense as a warning grunt.

Troy, no MT in the cards for us, we're here in Idaho & didn't draw WY so we'll be here at home for the duration. We'll leave MT to you & yours. (grin)

Slim, Troy & family are all exceptional callers, his kids are well on their way too, I believe all of them have called competitively & they are very good!!

Craig, yes much better, but lose the thump off the end of each chuckle & soften them the best you can so each chuckle flows into the next. I know it's tough to do because we are so inclined to want to make a nice thumping grunt after a bugle of any sorts. (grin) You'll notice when most bulls are chuckling that you can hardly tell air is being drawn in for the next chuckle to follow. When giving grunts you can hear the bull sucking air in as if he was "gasping" for air, this is normal just not as obvious with chuckling. Rory in his first calling post above did a real nice job with them.

Hey guys! I was definitely not trying to intimidate or scare anyone off. I am just a passionate Elk hunting, Elk calling fool. I have been fortunate to have met some very skilled Elk hunters and Elk callers over the years. I listened to what they did and said, and got enough guts to call in front of them, which was sometimes hard to do because it can be intimidating. I asked them questions and practiced, practiced and practiced some more. i was just trying to become the best caller I could be. I am still learning. I do not know it all. LOL! There are some guys on here that have some skills that I am sure I would like to learn. Everyone's mouth and palate are a little different and you may have to tweak things a little to get the sounds close to what you are trying to accomplish. My experience with myself and my family and the countless other people I have helped with their Elk calling might help others on this site. You never know where help will come from...my son helped me with my grunts when he was 5 years old!! I had videoed some of the best Elk competition callers and my son had watched the video over and over. I came home from work and my 5 year old said, "Hey Dad, listen to this," and he bugled and did some grunts that were awesome. My jaw dropped and I asked him how he was getting that great grunt like that. I went and got my tube and reed, bugled, did some grunts. He told me I was using too much voice!! So I had him slow it down and show me what he was doing. I had watched the video lots of times before. My point is there is lots to be learned from all kinds of different people here...everyone brings something a little different to this Elk calling thing. I have taken pieces and parts of bugles and cow sounds and hunting strategies from numerous different Elk callers to try to improve my game. Troy

Hey Troy... welcome to "the" elk forum friend. I grew up in your neck of the woods (T. Falls, Plains, Libby, Troy, Whitefish, Missoula, Kalispell, and graduated from CF in 77... yep, my pop was a timber faller and moved around a bit... ). Really like your calling (and your boys.. that young man is incredible). I'll be checking out your products for sure. I'm kind of stuck on my Berry double reed diaphrams but as always, am willing to try new products. Heck if Craig (flystrait) likes your calls, that speaks volumes! Do you ever make it out to HH reservoir for them big cuts running up the creeks? Used to be a blast when I lived there.. Looking forward to hearing more of your elk sounds. RJ

Brent: Those sounds are plenty good to fool any elk. Good real sounding stuff there! To my old ears, you might work on the front end of you bugle but everything else sounds great.

I was thinking the same, but for hunting season! My partner might be a little butt-hurt but I think he would understand when he heard the kid call.

I make the front end of the bugle like that on purpose. I think that it puts my tongue and jaw in a slightly better position for more control of the air pressure. He is just a natural. We would go to calling competitions and I would video and study all of the best callers. I also would pick their brains for tips. JJ, sounding pretty damn good to me, although I'm certainly not an expert .. I agree with your analysis on a bit of tone variation on the chuckles but I don't agree that your bugles are too aggressive, perhaps just a bit too long but hell, we're not in a RMEF competition while in the woods.. Your sounds don't have to match a certain script.. Love the various tones/voice inflection you're working into your bugles. 150% improvement from a few years ago IMO..

Then a bugle with chuckles. Same thing again...a lip bawl scream (definitely needs a lot of work) and then I got a little carried away and did some obnoxious chuckles with a bugle and more chuckles.

What calls and tube are you using? You have a very unique sound.

Uh oh...unique is probably not a good thing.

I'm using a bugling bulls bully bull with the tone selector all the way open, with a herd master tone top diaphragm.

I'm about 5' from the microphone (about as far as I can get, small cluttered room) and I'm facing away from it so I don't overload the mic.

No no, its all good! Unique is a word I use when people have what I call some type of singnature to there tone, sequence of calls, etc.

Try using less tounge pressure, I sounds to me that you are forcing the call in to the roof of you mouth with your tounge with some good pressure. Try dragging out all your calls from beginning to end, I do this frequently to hear all my tones and then I will speed up the process.

Slim posted up a soundclip of Greg "gselkhunter" doing this same thing as a teaching tool. I'm not sure what thread it was in. Colan, can you post that up again, its a great sound bite to imitate, and then speed up the process.

Ctdad,You are on the right track. I have helped countless guys become better callers.
I liked your Scream bugle, and think you should make your location bugle a bit more like the scream bugle without as much voice and aggression. IMO.On the location bugle you want to get to that high pitch and hold it ... Make it bounce off of and echo off 3 ridges! Every elk in the country will have heard it and it only takes 1 to answer back to give away the whole herd! I will add an audio clip to illustrate what I mean.Make your location bugle longer like this. but do not do any grunts. This is my 10 year old son doing what I consider a PERFECT Location bugle, with the 1st bugle on this clip. You want the high pitch to really carry and the big Waaa he puts in the bugle makes it sooo loud! That is our Signature location bugle. Very Powerful. Not too shabby at all. Your chuckles are really very good. Would recommend you work on hitting a high note (higher than what you hit in this post and the bugles with grunts) in your bugles. As far as bull sounds go, a locator bugle and chuckles are kind of the money sounds. Locators are used well, to locate (a two or three note bugle with a long carrying high note) and the chuckles are bread and butter to show a bull you're trying to call cows to you. Very, very nice first offering OS hunter.

I've been practicing with my challenge call, but can't get a consistent high note. When I switched to the mellow yellow I'm able to hit a much better high note. Now if only the wife can put up with my racket.

If you keep bugling on the mellow yellow, you will blow it out in no time. It is really a cow call that you can do a few bugles on, but is not really meant to be cranking bugle after bugle on. Many other calls are better for that. If you are using the Raging Bull it is a much better bull call. just my $0.02.

mandrroofing, I think you are blowing way too hard on the reed and there's no mid-tone in both your bugles and chuckles. Drop your jaw and soften up your tongue. Learn how to go through the tones (low to high) slow at first. You could practice a goosey beginning so that the reed breaks to the mid tone, and then you can press your tongue harder to get the high tone. Your bugles are not allowing for the mid and high tone ---you blow right by the good sounds and then almost cut out on the top end. When the pitch gets screechy, that's one pitch too high on the top end and you are blowing too hard imo. You will be louder and more controlled if you do the goosey beginning and control your tongue. I will add a audio clip i did on my phone to illustrate.Hope this helps--->Troy
