Checking places for elk hunt.

Any of you out there ever hunt the Uncompahgre National Forest in Colorado? Trying to pick some places to dig into for my 1st elk hunt.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You are prob looking at GMU 62?

Lots of guys in 62, but some good elk numbers as well. Don't be afraid to go low. I mean sage and juniper low. Gotta go, but I'll give some more advice tmro when I've got more time for a response.

Do you live out here? If so, you've got a serious leg up on competition. Get out and scout a few times if ya can and it'll be a real difference maker. If I couldn't scout I'd probably look at some "nice" looking private ranches that I know the elk must migrate to once the troops hit the hills. You can usually predict their travel routes on and off these large private parcels pretty easily. If you can't come out and scout than put together a solid plan of attack i.e: places you need to check out as soon as you arrive. Try to pick places that others won't go and access points without parking spots or camp grounds and this should help you beat the crowds. There will be about a million guys parked and camped on Divide rd. I would stay clear of that but certainly look at where you think those guys will hunt and where the elk will likely seek refuge.
