I can't live without it so I coughed up the big bucks for the Special license. Choose my top unit as 1st choice, drew General elk as my 2nd pick. I get to hunt and keep my points plus gain another point for not drawing 1st choice unit. I'll take it. Can't wait!

Joe, I have max points but put in for a tough to draw unit. I didn't put in a 2nd choice, heck I already have Idaho to fall back on.

I hear you Paul. I don't like to spread myself too thin either unless I have a good reason. I'd rather hunt 1 state and hunt it right. I have 20+ days set aside for the Wyoming hunt. Unbelievably I'm NOT hunting Montana this year. A Kansas deer hunt threw a wrench in my bow season and I don't want to dump the bucks just to gun hunt elk. I am going to go there however and enjoy elk camp with friends... and get serious about some wolf hunting. I can never seem to put elk on the back burner to call for wolves. With no elk tag I know I won't be distracted and I'll be doing the elk some good.

Just out of curiosity can someone tell me how Wyoming works for non residents? Do they have OTC tags? Seems like everyone talks about 6-7 points. I tried to figure it out on their website but got sidetracked and pretty confused.

They have no otc tags. They have general units that u can hunt with a general tag. You can hunt any of those units with the tag. You then could buy the archery license and hunt it witj your bow and then with a rifle during that season if you don't scote with your bow. Some units rifle starts in sep, others start on oct 1 or the 15th. It takes 1 pt to get the general tag. It was either 80% success or 100% this year with 1 pt. If more than 1 hunter submit together they average your pts. Some units are limited so it takes pts to draw. If the unit has 25 tags and 100 people put in with max pts 7 then they have 25% chance to draw. The tags are given to those with the most pts first. So if 10 people with 7 pts put in they get 10 of those tags and 6 pt people get a shot at the rest ect.until all the tags are gone. Some % of the tags for each unit is set aside for a purely random draw so pts don't matter for those few tags and some are put in a special draw that costs $1000. This usually lowers the points needed to draw a unit or is used to draw a gen tag and keep any pts you have. I am new at this and hope I helped you out. If I screwed it up someone else will chime in. You can buy just pts from July to September.

Josh, Go to that link. It'll just take you to our "Wyoming NR Points" thread. Read the couple posts I made and look at the one link someone provided. Explains it all.

As far as OTC goes: It takes 1 point min to draw the General tag in the Random Drawing. Usually 1 is all you need but some have bad luck.

BUT, if you apply for the General elk tag in the Special license draw it is guaranteed even with zero points... for more money of course. The nice thing is it is also guaranteed as a 2nd choice, again with no points, so you can put a draw tag as choice 1 and keep/gain points if you don't draw it while also getting the GEN ELK tag as your #2 pick. Points are based on 1st choice only.

I get the GEN license every year as choice 2 while also applying for other tags as my #1 pick and accumulating points for not drawing them.
