Postby mandrroofing » 02 08, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Hey guys,i was trying to understand the preference point page and from what i could tell GMU 55 required 0 points? im assuming that means its OTC tags? The code i was looking at was EE055O1A and it read 0 0 for preference points.just wanted to make sure i was reading that right. Thanks!

It's a 0 point draw so not OTC but can be drawn without using any points. You can actually get a point and the tag if you apply for the point first

You'd have to check the draw odds which Paul conveniently placed in the top rt hand corner of your screen. But it is likely that all 6 of you could draw. Alot of these 0 point draw areas are severely overlooked and can be great hunts.

gmu 55 had over 400 leftover tags according to hunterstrailhead, so you should be able to draw tags for 6 people.

last year was our first year elk hunting so we had 0 points and got drew on unit 55 as our second choice. I spoke to the wildlife officer in that unit and according to him it use to be a OTC unit, they changed it to a draw unit, but there is always tags left because they offer so many in that unit. Just as a heads up we hunted around the Taylor Park Resivor, I forget the name of the drainage but it was in the small wilderness area almost at the end of the road. Colligate Peaks wilderness, it was 2 drainages up there. We saw elk in there almost every day. It was the only place we could find that wasnt pressured really bad. Down at the resivor there is alot of cabins (30 or so), which is not a bad thing but it stayed booked with ATV riders. This is the only area in unit 55 that we were at, but just as a heads up it was extremely crowded. Good luck

I just put in my application for 55 as well. I'm a non-res and I put the preference point code as my first choice and 55 either sex archery as a second choice. Looking at the last couple years it seems to be a guranteed draw.If you are real worried I would forgo the preference point and just enter 55 as first choice. We are doing a backpack style hunt trying to get away from the ATV crowds. PM me if you want to bounce ideas back and forth.

55 is a Limited unit but still has had leftover tags after the main draw. Big hills out there, one guy described the area to me as everything is up. We stayed In Gunnison before so if you need to know about local supplies let us know.
