Do it all diaphragm mouth call?

Hey guys last year i used bugling bulls raging bull diaphragm call.I liked it but was woundering if there is something better? Thanks guys!

That is one great call. It has probably won more world championships than any other call. But you have to remember, it is the caller and not the call that makes it so good. Everyone has a different palet and what works for one person may not necessarly work well for another. You just need to fish around and try several to find out what seems to work the best for you.

I have made this statement on several post in the past. " The very best call is the one that works best for you " !

I agree as well with WW. If you are using a reed for more than cow sounds meaning bull sounds as well, I think its important that a good tube is matched for quality sounds. I know Elknut has a great tube that projects bull sounds very well.. IMO not all tubes are created equal

I agree to a point, but not all latexes on diaphrams are the same. Some latexes stretch very fast, and all youre really left with is a diaphram that makes decent cow talk.
I loved the Primos Palete Plates, loved how long the latexes last. I've used the ones that Abe Meline used to make, and they were a good diaphram. I've had very little experience with Paul's diaphrams, but that will soon change...
Also, you have to decide which is easier for you to use...single, double, split double, triple...and yessir, I think the single latex is easier to use with both bull and cow sounds.
Also the way you store your diaphrams helps determine how long it'll last.
Not all diaphrams are created equal. Learn to trim them to fit your mouth, learn to shape them as well.

the Raging Bull and the Screamin Tormentor make great sounds but.......i ware them out too quickly. i'd love to find a single that doesn't. i've moved on to Carltons doubles and triples now for most sounds and they don't ware out so fast.

I like the Raging Bull and Screaming Tormentor, but I'd say my favorite is The Closer (orange one). Makes awesome cow sounds and good immature bull sounds as well! Also, it's hard to lose with the floro coloring

Matt, the right call for the job is certainly important, the Raging Bull is a very good mouth reed & very possibly one of the best out there for specific sounds. I use that very reed during my elk hunts as well but it's my 2nd best one! My goto reed is the Mellow Yellow, I chose that one because it has a slightly lighter tension on the latex than the Raging Bull, this allows me to get very soft tones from it that I cannot do well with the Raging Bull, but it doubles with very convincing bull bugles, chuckles, moans & groans as well. I use the Raging Bull primarily for far reaching Location Bugles more than anything. The Mellow Yellow gets the nod from me! (grin) The most important aspect in using a good single latex reed is lots of practice, there is no substitute!

Thanks Paul,I was looking up info on the mellow yellow and I think ill order one to try out.another thing,do you carry several spear mouth reeds handy in the field incase one is damaged or lost?

Matt, on all day hunts I really don't worry about extra reeds, I carry one Mellow Yellow & one Raging Bull. The Mellow Yellow is in my mouth nearly the entire time I'm out elk hunting. To date I've never lost one. If going in for multiple days I'd have a spare of each in my pack. One thing to consider as well is although the Raging Bull is my 2nd choice I can still do well with it in imitating cow or bull sounds so it's a nice back up!

Paul, are these your calls? I still have and use the tube you sent me in 2009, love it. Man, it really does the thrick. I've used it in a few contests, and now all I can do is judge the contests..lol

Anthony, the reeds we use & carry are Bugling Bull game calls by Rockie Jacobsen, I do not make these. We've used them for many years now & they seem to fit the bill very well. Glad to hear the Chuckler Bugle is still serving you well, we call in lots of bulls every year with it too! Thanks.

Another call you may want to try is the Herd Master by Bugleing Bull. It is great for reaching those hi pitched sounds of younger bulls. It makes a great change up from the Raging Bull and is a very controlable call for the new user.

Paul, I've still got the diaphrams you sent me in 09, and I'm down to my last few Abe Meline diaphrams. Knight and Hale sent me some diaphrams last summer, and I like the Aspen a lot. John Sarcazin from Momument, Co, gave me a bunch of his diaphrams and they are a decent diaphram. But we will talk later this summer. I'd rather order from you then from Rocky...we had some differences a few years ago...lol.
Something most guys dont realize is how dirty diaphrams get, and the germs that live and grow on them. I learned from a dentist several years ago, and now still continue to dip my diaphrams and cow calls in mouth wash every few days. It doesnt harm the calls at all. Something all you guys should think about.

As others have stated, the reed that you can make the best sounds should be your go to reed. I have come to accept that most reeds can sound realistic/good but the reed can only sound as good as the person blowing the reed.

The Raging Bull is also my favorite and it makes great bugle with decent cow sounds (as is). Like any musical instrument, the reed needs to be tuned to your style of blowing. I tune/stretch/flex/bend the Raging Bull reed to get the perfect plastic tension to match my calling/blowing technique. I have some with loose tension for sweet, calm, and soft cow/calve calling, medium tension for both cow and bull, and stretched tight for pretty much full throttle bugling only.

I am very picky with elk sound selection to the point where the first sound that comes out of the reed has to be/sound just right, according to me each and every time. Not sure if the real elk cares but I do. So far, it has been working well in pressured OTC public land where there are more artificial sounds and the elk are quiet.
