What did you learn during the 2026 Elk season?

Postby Elkhunttoo » 10 08, 2026 •  [Post 1]

For me, Elk season of 2026 is over.

What is something new that you learned this hunting season that will help you find more success in 2027?

I assume you intended to say the 2026 elk season. I used to take going elk hunting for granted. After missing two of the last three season including the latest, I don't anymore. As I look ahead, I feel like a ship out on the ocean facing headwinds and some dark clouds. I hope this is just a small tempest and there is more clear sailing ahead, but who knows but God?

I re-learned I love the sound of a bugle. Better yet, multiple bugles.

I HEAR YOU :D

This year I heard bugles but not as many as I was hoping for and most of them in the distance. Honestly I got almost as much excitement hearing a bull bugle really close to my wife’s stand she was in as i did shooting the bull I was able to get this year. Just knowing how close the bull was to her and knowing she had a good chance got me stoked

I learned that I should probably become a Colorado resident again so I can hunt elk more often for less money  I definitely missed the elk woods this September but these past couple of weeks have been awesome hunting with my son for his first whitetail with his compound. It's been a learning curve but he finally did it! Got a doe at 17yds with his little bear bow. 33Ibs 22in draw and 343gr arrow. We discovered on a giant buck that he doesn't have the fps and needs to aim to compensate. We've spent the past few nights after his doe slowly twisting the limb bolts and now he's pulling 40Ibs on the dot.

Not bragging,

But I seem pretty good at finding elk,
I just need to get to them

That is the difference in moving on the ground hunting and tree stand hunting. I see fewer elk in my stand, but I am able to get a lot more.

My brother taught me a saying years ago….

“Their is seeing elk, and there is killing elk, I’m sick of seeing them, I want to kill elk”

That was his saying when he was trying to convince me to get into a tree stand….i will never regret the switch

I'm a lot more Kinesthetic, I got to be moving. I quit hunting deer with my dad,,, He could sit all day in a stand I have a hard time sitting.
And Ive learned to appreciate moving around. I sat for years because I could barely walk
My long abo trapping buddu and snow goose huntin partner jus mentioned pointing to a his wall of whitetails,, "That buck I sat for 28 days an hour before and after LST"

My big day with Julie and Andrew this year slightly over 7 miles 1200 feet up,, 1200 feet down, and I was so worn out it took days to recover.. In on 4 different herds , 3 herd bulls under 80 yards and a couple Wisconsinan Cheese-heads
I have learned to enjoy being more patient on the calling stand My last 3 deer and 3 bear and turkeys caome out of a blind
Saw 8 mature Montana bulls from this blind

Lefty: I see the problem you are having with tree stand hunting. Before you can ambush an elk from a tree, you must first find a tree to place a stand in.
