The Anonymous Giant

There are some distinguished hunters on this and other hunting forums. But has it occurred to you that some great hunters never post an online message, write an article or talk to a reporter about their hunting success? They are and mean to stay totally anonymous. I have no doubt that they are legal and scrupulous hunters that just don't want to be in the spotlight.

I have a friend that helped me by editing my tree stand book. He was a college English major who graduated from Oregon State University. He gave me some pointers on writing the book, but nothing to add or take away from the material. He too is a bow hunter and has even spent a little time in a tree stand. He has killed some of the biggest bulls I have seen come out of the coast range. I asked him one time why he did not write a magazine article about his big bull kills or even a book. His hunting is his own and it is personal. He does not want to be a public spectacle. I really don't get it, but I respect him and his skill. His buck deer kills are also very impressive, and he gets them all near his home.

Another Hunter I met in church, whom I hunted with once, has killed a large variety of animals, all in Oregon. He has many trophy bulls mounted in his house. He has done the taxidermist work all on his own. His predator kills are vast too, but you would never guess any of this if you did not get to know him well. He is a bow hunter that never tree stand hunts, but calls. His call is/was "Power Bugle". He never cow calls or uses a diaphragm, but he is consistent in bagging big bulls. The one trait I envy him for is his amazing ability to see many things I miss. He never reads how to books or articles. What he knows he has learned on his own and he is passing that down to just his sons.
The third fellow I will tell you about was a logger. He is deceased now, but in his day, he too was a very consistent hunter. He never ventured far from his home in southern Oregon. He never mounted his trophies but laid the racks on the headers over his garage. He and his wife never had any children. I do not know of him ever buying meat.

I suppose many of you know of this type of hunter. They eat what they kill, and it comes entirely from areas open to the public. What makes them tick? To the best of my knowledge, they never poach. They have no need to. Their hunting skills must be beyond that of some highly acclaimed hunters.

Paul Schafer comes to mind. The guy killed lots of trophy big game here and all over the world. Never entered any of them in the books or publicized them in anyway. He just wanted to make bows and hunt. His Schafer Silvertip bows are highly shot after by serious archery hunters. Some people are legends in their own mind. He was a legend too many, but not to himself. Pretty cool guy.
