It is early the first morning of archery season. You have a slick and fat rag-horn come squarely in front of you at 25 yards. He is oblivious to your presence. As you look him over you determine he is a yearling with good genetics that has been feeding well. Broadside he and reaches down to grab another bite of grass. Do you shoot him or wait for something better?

Hmmm. Opening day for archery we’ll be in the spud state for pretty much the entire month of September. This small package of steaks is probably heading to the freezer and then we’ll start working on #2.

100% full send for me. Any legal bull with a shot opportunity is getting an arrow flung. I've spent enough now learning otc and coming home empty handed to have afforded a decent 1x1 guided hunt. I am ready to pack my own elk off the mountain

I like to hunt, our freezer is only game,, So I start out ignoring the cows, spikes and small bulls the first 20 plus days .

I wouldn't consider myself a trophy hunter or meat hunter either . Elk fit in the same category as waterfowl. Fair chase and a challenge. and for years it was about getting our daughters the game or a newbie

Yhats what Ive tried with our middle daughter,,, so many times. However she developed some "bad :" hunting habits from dad
She will wait on a bigger bull no matter how close other elk may be

I will get back to ya’ll on this one….i will talk to my wife before the season…I have yet to kill a nice mature bull with my bow…so that is the goal going into the season….right now our freezer are fairly full so it would probably be an okay year to pass and hold out….but, at the same time, meat in the freezer is hard to top….like I said, I’ll get back to you on this one

As for me; I'm shooting. Some of the best elk I've had on my plate came from a well-fed spike or raghorn.

Elk camp is 1350 miles one way and only comes once a year. I have never passed on a legal elk.
