How many broadhead tipped arrows….

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 05 08, 2026 •  [Post 1]

does it take to kill an elk? The last time I checked it was only one :chuckle:. I personally had very few occasions where more than one broadhead tipped arrow was shot at said wapiti. This year, recently, I replaced my 5 arrow quiver with a carbon 3 arrow unit. My overall hunting bow weight dropped like it was on a starvation diet (definite +) and I know from experience I’ll have ample projectiles at the ready for a days hunt. Has anybody else “just said no” to the larger capacity, heavier quivers attached to their wheel bows?

I still have a full five arrow quiver on my bow. Believe it or not; I once shot five lethal arrows into an elk before it finally fell over. That happened back in the days when we used aluminum arrows. When it finally fell it landed on its side and ruined all five arrow shafts. Certainly, one arrow was enough, but it just stood there at the waterhole, so I kept killing it.
BTW: Three arrow quivers are for old geezers.

I can’t argue your logic sir. I shot those fencepost aluminum arrows (large ones-2216/2219s) for many, many moons. They did the job but did not have KE like the newer carbon shafts out of the faster bows we have now.

I swapped from a 5 arrow to 3 last year. If you are selective on harvest opportunities, it works. I kind of what to attach an arrow tube to my pack for a few back up arrows.

Three arrows are plenty for anyone that hunts out of a base camp. They would be fine for hunting from a spike camp if you have a separate arrow container to store arrows in. I would not want any small game dinner arrows in the quiver.

I had to turn around to look how many arrows are in my new quiver :6

Previous quiver had 4,,, and the previous before that was 3 arrows,,, which I lost

Typically I only miss once per opportunity: Im not sure if I should use the crying emoji or the laughing emoji   or maybe the embassement

My first cow elk I put two perfect arrows in her before she toppled,,,maybe a 5 second time span.

As a rifle hunter , After the recoil of the rifle drops back down and the critter is still upright. it gets a second shot , no debate, no thinking just an instant response with another shot

One of my bows has a 5 arrow quiver on it. My backup bow has an 8 arrow quiver. But that doesn't matter because whichever one I'm using always has only 4 broadheads and either 1 blunt or judo point. As I hold the bow up to shoot, the judo is always loaded to the front of the quiver, farthest away from me. That way there is never a chance of drawing it out instead of a broadhead when an elk shows up.

Guess I don't see any advantage of a 3 arrow setup. The weight difference between 3 arrows and 5 arrows is only 0.130 lbs. :?

One time I shot a bull and there was a huge blood trail. In griz country, just before dark. When we get to the elk, it is still alive but in some thick stuff. My hunting partners and I shot plenty of arrows that day. Some of the broadheads are still stuck in trees. It all started with poor shooting on my part.
