Postby Tigger » 04 16, 2026 •  [Post 1]

Montana must like me (which makes sense). I drew a limited entry tag for the first time!

I hunted “The Bob” once many years ago and killed a 6x6. Would like to hunt Montana again some day, maybe in a few years. Hoping for WY or CO archery elk this year. Just have to wait till end of May to find out.

Ha, not true unless you’re speaking of a governors type tag in some states which is sold to the biggest money offer. I believe the tag he is speaking of is no different than a special permit APP not unlike the other western elk states we apply for.

Where at?

I hope this will be my year as well. I applied for a mule deer tag in Colorado. Using 14 points. Nothing is ever guaranteed but I’m pretty sure it’s a short bet with the points I have. Pretty excited about it but when you wait that long for a license, the pressure is on. If I save 14 points and go home empty-handed I can’t lie, I would be disappointed. One of my secrets to success with elk is to never put pressure on myself. I never care if it’s the first day or last day of a hunt. I just hunt. But I hunt elk every year if I can. A hunt for a big mule deer is a one shot deal for me. A guy I know who had the same tag last year killed this buck at first light on the first morning. Not sure what it scores, but it’s a shooter.

Good luck!

Joe - I agree. Build points and pressure comes with that hunt. I’ve got 17 deer points in Colorado. Need to burn them one of these years…. Hopefully sometime after I burn my 20 elk points…

Limited entry tags with lots of points invested definitely come with inherent pressure. If you can go into that hunt and do the whole thing with no pressure to find/perform, you're better than me.

A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to draw a coveted late season mule deer tag in Washington. I used 15 points, which means nothing in Washington other than I had applied for that tag for 15 years. It was a unit I am intimately familiar with hunting during the general season in October, but had only gotten to tag along on the late season hunt one time with a friend that drew the tag. Even though I knew the migration corridors, the staging areas, the quality of deer expectations, everything, I was still a nervous wreck going into that hunt. In the first 2 days I hunted I passed on bucks that I would never have dreamed of passing during the general season. My Dad who is a dyed in the wool meat hunter was beside himself watching me glass up a 24" heavy 4pt with eye guards thrashing a tree at 40 yards and never even taking the rifle off my shoulder.

After a couple of days, the pressure subsided and I really got into the hunt. It was more about putting as many deer in front of me as possible and I had a lot of fun pursuing it. I hunted a total of 12 days of the 20 day season and killed my deer on the 2nd to last day. When I saw him, it was a no brainer. That's the one we've been looking for the whole time. It goes down in as my favorite hunt of all times, so far anyway.

Tigger isn't new to this game, in fact some would say he's well past his prime. That's probably true. I see that as an advantage for him. He won't be able to run down the hill and shoot any bull he wants, he'll have to move slow and carefully to not hurt his hips, and inevitably some old stinky bull will visit him.

You want to talk about pressure? The area I’m hunting is unique. There are only two deer hunts each season. They are in mid December. And…. each hunt is only 2 days!!! 14 years worth of points for a 2 day hunt.

I’m told I can pre scout the area but that won’t do any good until about the end of November. I’m deer hunting in Pa then. I think I’m going to head out a week early and scout things right before I hunt. I’m definitely nervous about the hunt.

On the flip side I only applied for a cow tag in Wyoming this year for elk. If I draw that, it will be a fun hunt. No pressure at all.
