Pre-made "frozen" base camp chow list....

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 06 20, 2025 •  [Post 1]

I've been hunting for the better part of 50 years (yep, I'm middle age). One of the things I have learned is that having pre-made meals in the cooler at base camp, which require minimal time and energy to get on to the plate, is pretty huge in the scheme of things after looooong days in the elk woods (ok, you can mix, match and substitute here... elk, deer, bear, moose, goat, sheep, caribou, bigfoot, etc.). Here are a few of my standard pre-made frozen meals that have stood the test of time and are perennial hunting camp favorites.... I'd like to hear a few of yours also.

Spaghetti and meatballs. Heat it up and serve it on a big pile of noodles. Some shredded cheese on top is a plus.

Chili. Heat it up and serve as is or over some fried or boiled spuds. Again, some shredded cheese on top is a plus.

Stew... elk, venison, beef, whatever. This evening chow stands on its own. Maybe some biscuits on the side.

Breakfast scramble. Put whatever you want in this, but I like beer boiled brats on the BBQ, chunked up small, sharp cheddar cheese, obviously a buncha eggs, diced red/green peppers, diced onions, diced mushrooms, etc.... This meal is always a great choice after a long day in the woods.

Pulled pork on toasted buns. Whip up your best pulled pork recipe, make it, freeze it, and serve it on some toasted buns. This is another dish that can benefit from some shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top.

Sloppy Joes. Not the Manwich variety but a homemade batch of Sloppy J’s, served on some toasted buns. Did I mention that a handful of shredded cheese on top is a great addition to some of these dishes?

Fried rice medley. Lotsa rice (I prefer brown), a big bunch of quick sautéed vegetables, chunked up BBQ’ed or crock pot “thick” boneless pork chops (Mrs. Wapiti gets the big un’s from Costco).

OK, that’s a few I can think of right now and am planning for this year’s wapiti hunt(s)… what do you cats have in your premade base camp cookbook you can add to the list. I’m always looking forward to expanding my arsenal ;)

You pretty much listed all my favorites. We've also done lasagna, pot pies, fajitas.

i will cook up several things at home. My wife's Home Made Banana and chocolate chip Breakfast muffins are a big hit every year. Also put together several different kids of taco wraps for lunches. For dinners i will pre-cook whatever sounds good the week before season. Personal favorite is potatoes, peppers, onions, and whatever kind of meat, pork chops, steak, chicken, (and hopefully some grouse throughout the season)....Have all of it precooked and then throw it on the griddle in the evenings, cooks fast, easy clean up, and tastes great......definitely have eaten my share of soups over the years at night too

My personal favorite is swiss steak and potatoes. Made at home frozen in a gallon zip lock. We have a small cooler we use to thaw out dinner. Just place the bag in the cooler before you leave camp in the morning and by evening its ready for the stove.
Elk are where you find em...
