New Colo Draw regs

Postby saddlesore » 02 11, 2025 •  [Post 1]

From the CPW meeting last night. You think the CPW draws were confusing before, wait until you try to try figure out the new regs.
First and 2nd draw will both use preference points 2nd draw will still be 100% preference to youths. Then both resident and non residents will be drawn using preference points. 75% res, 25& non. After that it will be random draw. The chance of drawing a zero point. Staring i application will be slim. Starting in 2028,you will have to state if you want a preference point on your application if you did not draw. IF you want one, you will be charged $15, res., $30 non. But you can still but a preference point if you don't have 1st 2nd choice for more money. This for deer, elk, pronghorn, and turkey. Sheep ,goat, moose are a whole another story. You will still need the Qualifying License for the 2nd draw.
All the non-resident archery licenses will be by draw. However for 2025 and maybe a few years after, the total quota will be set at based on the number of OTC tags that were sold to non residents in2 024 approximately. So the only difference is you will have to select a unit.
Other changes too,but these are the basics.
Bonus points vs preference points--To confusing for me.
Oh, and one democratic legislator is trying to introduce a bill that wolf depredation fees and other cost will come from wildlife budget, not the general fund as it is suppose at present.

They're definitely goofin' it up but I do like the hybrid draw for randomized lottery. The point creep is ridiculous and there's no ceiling. I feel bad for everyone that has banked points for so long but they are the ones who contributed to it. I am glad to hear otc archery tags will still be readily available in the draw. I am going to miss unit hopping

Hey everybody! Been a while since I been here, this draw crap totally sucks the unit I hunted wasn’t a top of the line unit but I just love being out there elk hunting, always looked forward to driving out there stopping at Gene Taylor’s and buying a OTC tag for my unit and getting in there as deep as I could.

For a guy from far western Ky the drive I actually love but not getting drawn will be heartbreaking, those 2 weeks are my break away from life

You can still pull the unit for the next couple years. They are capping nores units to original otc quotas until they figure out more indepth. The only difference is not being able to unit hop like residents which is baloney. Every single hunter I happen across at the trailhead has happened to be a resident hunter lol plus you can do secondary draw and leftover tags. I wouldn't even start building points again until after 2028 when they redo the entire draw system

Hey Rancho, correct me if I'm wrong! But I think you can still do a little unit hoping in the area you have been hunting. That is a 3 unit area (4, 5, and 441)

The area I go to got cut down to 2 units but I've found the most excitement in them. I will have a deer tag good for those units though!! With a little luck ;)
