A real Wall hanger

Postby Lefty » 01 13, 2025 •  [Post 1]

My Father In Law passed in April. This past weekend my Sister in law said that the old Winchester Rifle had belonged to my FIL's father .I asked if I could take it to hang it up. in my hunt room.
A neighbor is a Winchester Lever Action collector
A real 1892 Winchester Lever action, Serial #102 .38 caliber

One of these days Ill get it over to a Collector down the street who specialized in Winchester lever actions, The gun only has a 3 digit serial, instead of 4 or more,, and was the numbering started at #1
Maybe he worst part someone , likely my father in law tried to sand off the rust, brown patina. The barrel has missing sections of rifling. rusted out? Broken off?

The bow is a Herters bow. I paid $35.00 in May 1971. I later looked in the Herters catalogue and saw the bow listed for $105.00 I suspect my neighbor worked out some sort of a deal in the back of Herters warehouse

Lefty that is awesome! I would like to own a firearm from that era, or slightly before that, someday. Maybe one that had the tiniest bit of history behind it.

Does it feel and balance like a modern day firearm?

Gene was the one who bought me the bow on the rack in the picture and taught how to shoot left handed with right eye dominance. He gave me aluminum arrows in the late 60's .
I always wanted his Corporal Dow Sharps Rifle,,,, until I heard the value of it

The Search for Corporal Dow Hardcover – May 31, 2006

The start of the restoration of a perfectly ordinary Civil War era Sharps military musket turns into a five year long search for information about both the gun itself and its previous owner, Corporal Wm. H Dow of the 2nd Wisconsin Regiment of the famed Iron Brigade of the Union Army. We learn that Corporal Dow served with distinction in a number of battles including Gainsville, Gettysburg and Bull Run. He entered the Minnesota Old Soldiers Home in 1927 and died later that year. The work done on the project was eventually rewarded when the husband and wife owners of the piece brought it and their very extensive research documentation to a local appearance in their community of the popular TV program Antique Road Show and the antique arms expert appraised their original $1000 purchase together with their research at a current value of $25,000. Gene and Linda Solyntjes, the co-authors, then spent the following three years writing their how-to book which shows the reader in great detail how to research any member of the US armed forces right back to the French and Indian War and how to research any US made military sidearm. There are literally hundreds of sites on the Internet to assist the researcher; it s merely a matter of knowing where to go, and a CD included with the book makes that a lot easier. A full size publication with over 200 pages and 64 photos, many in color.
