What do you know about bacholor bulls???

Postby Lefty » 08 22, 2024 •  [Post 1]

Or loners.
A long abo friend use to operate a Utah CWMU ( basically a hunting unit on private property) he had 3 bull tags and one public bull tag. There was generally 9=13 bulls within the CWMU.I don't believe they ever saw a single cow in September with in the unt. Pre-rut those bulls left NW Utah and made the rut and winter in southern Idaho mountain Ranges.

My second year of archery hunting I had an unbelievable experience of 8 bulls coming into the water hole while I was in a blind I was sitting over. 2 bulls over 360 that passed behind my blind, and downwind only 14 yards.
Of course, I was a total idiot. I only had a shooting hole in the front, and they were behing
These were the bulls in front. At that time I limited myself to a 22 yard shot,, ( bad shoulder, plus I had no idea how effective an arrow was at that time)

One year we had three bulls come charging in. I held off on bigger 6x6 20-yard frontal to watch my daughters shot

We spotted a big bull which evidently is living alone in a very small patch of isolated cover he will be our opening day hunt as of now .

I highly recommend Jim Horn's (Silent Calling) method. But you better be on your toes because they will sneak in on you without ever making a sound.

I believe there are different tricks or techniques that work. Jim Horn had his way and claimed it was very effective. I tried it, but never got it to work. I did not learn much from that experience as I never even got a bull to look in on me. I have had some success by making one short bugle then waiting. I think the elk are curious and will eventually come to check you out if they are in hearing range. You do not need to keep on calling. They got your message. Just be sure to call from a location that is concealed sufficiently so that the bull must come close enough for you to shoot before they can determine no real elk is present.

This time of year they are getting all pumped up for the rut…find a spring near by and shoot them out of a stand when they come in :D

But option #2 would be to try and locate them early in the morning and slip in and slow play them

We actually have been teasing a guy at work that drew an archery tag in a farming area about this. It would be hilarious seeing a guy in a tree stand on a pivot

I actually used the wheel of a pivot in the middle of a hay field as a ground blind once. I was guiding a hunter and he took a nice muley buck from that pivot.
