Hello there!

Postby Calpiti » 08 10, 2024 •  [Post 1]

Hi all! Im a brand-new member and elk hunter so I thought I would introduce myself. I didn’t grow up hunting and only started a few years ago so Im here to learn as much as I can. I live in Northern CA and just drew a SHARE elk tag so, needless to say, it’s the only thing on my mind these days. Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

Welcome. No idea what a SHARE tag is, could you explain it? Give us some details on your hunt and how you will approach it!

Welcome to the forum Calpiti. There are some good basic hunting principles and some that are more limited. Some things work well at one time or place and not so much at others. Experience will reveal the differences. There is enough diversity and experience right here to get you started off well. Enjoy the ride.

Hey all, thanks for the warm welcome. I will start a thread on another forum about my hunt and my many questions. SHARE stands for Shared Habitat Alliance for Habitat Enhancement. Basically, it’s a way for the public to access private land to hunt in CA. Private land owners get incentives to let the public hunt their land. And, in the case of elk, I imagine it’s a way to thin the herd to reduce damage to fences and crops and whatnot. It’s not on the traditional points system. You pay a fee for a chance to hunt a particular property for a particular species. Odds are slim but it made sense for me to try as I only have to elk preference points. And it paid off my first try!

Here is a link for more info:

Thanks again, everyone.

Calpiti: I want to welcome you to the forum. There is a wealth of knowledge here and a little joking around from Swede once in awhile without all the politics and arguing you may find on other forums.

Again, wELKome and good luck on your hunt.
