August 2024 WapitiTalk Photo of the Month Contest

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 01, 2024 •  [Post 1]

This month’s theme is “Flora and Fauna”! Let's see some pics with both plants and animals in them.

1. One photo submission allowed per month, per member (yep, stinky MODs may enter a photo also).
2. Photo must relate to the monthly theme (or risk being disqualified).
3. Do not use photo editing software to enhance your photo. Just post the photo as it was taken with your camera, smart phone, trail cam, etc. You may have to resize some photos so they are accepted by the forum software; remember, photos can only be 800X600 pixels "MAX" for our forum.
4. You may use older photos you have on hand, but, do not submit a photo that has won a previous WT photo contest.
5. Any WT member may enter a photo they have taken or appear in.
6. Judging – WT members will vote on monthly photo submissions.
7. Contest period will normally end the last day of the month.
8. Winner must contact WapitiTalk1 via PM and provide mailing address for prize (your prize may be sent directly from a WT sponsor or from RJ).
9. Prizes will vary from month to month.
10. All monthly winners will be automatically entered into the "photo of the year" contest.

The prize for the August 2024 contest is to be determined.

Does an image of one eating the other count?

Chose one when he wasn't eating. Just a better photo. it's too bad because I was SO close to the one when he has a mouthful of "flora", but he was just ever so slightly out of focus.

One area I hunt in Wyoming has a great mountain goat population. One time I saw a herd of about 30 of them.

I was tending to a ranchers field in late-May. I was working for an outfitter near Craig, CO. I saw a doe emerge in the field about 100 yds away, coming out of a river bottom. The doe walked to the top of the ridge and started "humping up." The way she was contorting her body was like nothing I had ever seen! Her front and rear legs were basically together and her back was arched. I watched her "mule deer yoga" for about a minute and it was done. She quickly walked over the ridge and disappeared down by the river. I didn't have my phone with me, so I made a mental note of where I saw her and walked back to the lodge.

About 20 minutes after birth, I returned to the site with my camera and started searching. I almost stepped on the fawn as I approached and had to hold the grass back with one hand while I took the picture with the other hand. The grass in the picture is about 4-6" tall.

I've since learned that the doe probably went down to the river to clean up and left her newborn to hide in the grass. Apparently the fawns do not attract predators when newly born. The fawn never moved when I took the pictures......frozen solid! I went back to work and hopefully the mom came back shorty after. I can only hope that someone eventually ate that baby! Better than me hitting it with a combine.
