Can anyone give me any info on his area? My outfitter is dropping my group off for 7 days up there on september 16. Camp is 10600 ft up. I'm already winded:) I'm not asking for your spots just any info on elk activity, size of bulls, good or bad place to hunt. Thanks for your help

Jon has some good camps! If you are at 10600 ft. that sounds like the camp he calls sun park. I was there two years ago. If it is you'll figure it out easily it's up high ( obviously ) and there are three or four good vantage points where you can locate elk. I was there after some black powder guys and still found elk everyday. It's steep country!

I hunted along 721 from September 9-16. I know how it was for us and I was wondering how it was farther in. We have always wanted to hunt around coffee pot but it's to much to hike in for my 67year old father in law. I just want to know how different your hunt was from mine. I did talk to a few people on their way out and it seemed they saw the same things as I did . We have been talking about using Eagle Mountain just trying to do my research before we make our next plan.

My partner and I will be hunting for the first time with Jon Sund, 3rd season/rifle.
I believe we will be at a drop camp at the "switchbacks" East Soap Creek area.
I have all his camps plotted out from his website and see Coffee Pot camp.
We usually traditional bow hunt Oregon.
Anyone rifle hunt Unit 54 in the recent past?
Do the shots tend to be longer or are the elk tending to stay in close to timber?

wideangle, can't really help you as for rifle season, I have only hunted in September. I have hunted around east soap creek but that was lower in elevation than Jon's east soap camp. I have hunted on my own in 54 for 3 years and 2013 decided to hunt with eagle mountain outfitters, just riding horses to camp and getting farther back in the wilderness than I have ever been will be an adventure that I'm sure will be a memorable hunt.

Elk seem to feed lower in elevation at night and head higher to bed as the sun rises in September, but I'm sure if you glass the open areas in the evening and mourning you should spot some, look for areas that have timber close to small meadows on the north and east sides of the mountain if the weather is warm, a foot or more of snow may push the elk to lower elevations.

We just did first rifle with Jon and Karen. Loved it, although we were in Lower Coffee Pot so had to work harder to get to elevation. My boyfriend did get a cow ... All elk we saw were, at most, 300 yds and coming in / out of dark timber, but sure we didn't glass as much as we should have. From radio traffic and personal interaction, each camp hit at least 50% success, with one camp being 5 for 5 (soap creek?), Upper Coffee was 2 for 2, both 6x6. Seemed everyone except us and the Meeker camp were enjoying a lot of activity!

We knew these camps involved roughing it, but weren't mentally 100% prepared ... However, I'm a female who has camped, hiked and traveled and just LOVED the whole experience anyway, despite not filling my tag ... Due to time constraints, rescheduling due to nasty wind storm, lost last two days of hunting. I'm ready to sign up for next year!

One word of caution ... Bears !!! We didn't see a single one, but signs and activity everywhere, including tent damage at several camps, incl ours. Despite hanging our game bags high, a bear got one of our quarters. I guess the carcass, which he dragged a good 150 yards wasn't enough for him.

How did your rifle hunt go with Jon Sund? Did you see many elk? Which camp where you at?
