Congratulations on your great tag Stick. I hope it ends with a great elk for you. Let us know how it turns out. We will look forward to seeing your big bull and big grin on the 2017 meat pole.

Hunted there several years ago. SW of Pie Town. I had a hard time adjusting to fairly open areas with large mature ponderosa pine and a little bit of oak brush, little water. Aside for some tips from friends in Albuquerque who hunted it, I stumbled around most of the 1st morning.

Went back to camp at lunch. At 1:00 I walked across the road and went in about 100 yards. A line of elk with a nice bull at the end were passing thru at a slow walk.

With a couple of soft cow calls ,the bull walked towards me and I put him down at about 75 yards with a muzzle loader. I went back to camp, drove my truck right to it. Processed it and hung it back inc amp when I got there.I let it cool over night, , put it on ice when I got to Socorro, drove home.

Congratulations! Sounds like you are in for an exciting hunt. New Mexico is an awesome state to hunt elk and any unit in the Gila is full of potential.
