I Missed You Guys!

Postby Trumkin the Dwarf » 08 13, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Gaack! I hate to get all sentimental, it ruins my tough guy aura. But it sure is nice to drop in and catch up. I haven't posted on here in almost two years!

I don't think I updated my fellow elkaholics when I left the mountains of Montana, but I've been in Texas since Christmas of 2014. And now I really have to ask, how do the flatlanders survive? I haven't even bothered to shoot my bow in almost a year. The task of making it into the mountains in search of elk seems insurmountable. I have some serious withdrawal symptoms going on here!

When I left Montana I figured to be away two years, and then move home. However, I kinda went and married a girl here... and it is no longer as simple as suffering for two years before returning to my local hunter ways. So at this point I am facing the incredibly daunting prospect of becoming an out of state hunter, doomed to endure whatever whims of nature are doled out on the week I take off work! And to make it even better, Montana's out of state policies are not the greatest, so I'm considering whether New Mexico might be a better option, or Colorado. Neither one sounds that appealing to me, but I'd welcome anyone who wants to change my mind.

Anyways, all that to say, hi everyone! Sorry for the long hiatous, and the whining. I look forward to living vicariously through you guys this fall. Oh, I'd love to hear a bunch of people saying that this out of state thing isn't as difficult as I'm imagining.

Sharp broadheads and short blood trails to you all!

Welcome back Malachi. It is great to hear from you. You can get OTC tags in Idaho, Washington and Oregon too. If you want to try Oregon I can steer you in the general direction of some elk. Closing the deal is always up to you. Anyway it is good to hear from you and welcome back.

Cancel the search party and inform Aunt Eustice in Billings that we've found him. He's been in Texas this whole time! Congrats on your hitching to a nice Texas girl! Ya, Montana is kind of a pain from an out of state perspective (I haven't been a resident there for many, many moons), but, you do know the area a bit I would assume, and, I don't think its too hard to get a tag there. I hunt ID and my current home state of WA each year and its not too bad. I know zilch about hunting CO but Indian Summer talks lots about WY and from what I understand, it doesn't take but a point or two to get a hunt there. I think NM is just straight luck of the draw but boy oh boy, there are some toads there. At any rate, welcome back bud. PM me your mailing info and I'll send you a Wapiti Talk decal (you're kind of a new member in a way) so you don't forget about us anytime soon... ;) RJ

This outta state thing is that bad. Beats the alternative of not hunting elk at all. I've been putting in for an elk tag in Michigan for over 10 years with no results. I've been hunting Colorado since 2002 and I always start planning the next years trip on the drive home.

Welcome back. Really like your profile picture.

Thanks for the welcome back fellas! Swede, that is a great offer, thank you very much. I do believe Oregon is farther than I'm wanting to travel(ditto for Idaho/and MT) but I sure appreciate the willingness to help. And RJ I sent you a PM. Thanks for the rundown on the various states!

This has happened twice already! Once for Thanksgiving, and once this past June. Dunno if it has had an effect... yet ;).

And I'm glad you like the photo! It came courtesy of my talented brother, who can make the ugliest elk hunter look cool.

It is good to hear from you guys! Thanks again!

Hey Paul! Glad to be back. I'm tentatively hoping to set up a hunting trip for 2017. Hopefully I can get motivated and stay that way from hearing all about elk season here!

Heh! I guess it IS only fair to leave a couple years up for grabs for the rest of you. I'm not into taking the grand prize every year, that's Michael Phelps' job!

Montana is to far from TX? I drive 33hrs to where I hunt at in MT. Yes it sucks but I love the spot I hunt. As for New Mexico. I would love to hunt that again. I saw more elk in one day there then I do in montana for a week!!!! The problem is it took me 5 yrs before I got a tag there. I do know guys that got theirs on the first year. If you want I can help with some places to put in for in NM. Unit 16a,c or d and unit 36 are good.

Welcome back, Malachi. Congratulations on "kinda marrying." Great to have you back around the campfire. Many of y'all from Texas hunt southern CO OTC, you could probably find some folks to share trip cost. Better yet, they could pay your way on account of your vast knowledge and effervescent personality ;)

Hey I wasn't trying to be a Richard or anything. Just telling you what some of us flat landers have to do just to hunt. Lol

Don't feel bad about not getting on the site for awhile. I didn't get on it at all last year cuz I didn't have a tag and couldn't bare to think about elk hunting.

apply for new mexico. texas owns most of the state anyhow. drive to colorado and hunt otc in the southern part of the state. alot of texans do that..if you draw nm, then you stop there instead of driving thru it to colorado. need help on where to apply then pm me. NM doesn't cost that much to apply. CO is easy and gotta be one of the most beautiful places to hunt too.
