The chuckler vs. The bully bull

Well I think I'm ready to use a big boys bugle now. For years I used a primos with the blue reed, and it worked fine, but now I'm feeling better about using a diaphram call. I used one to kill my bull this year cow calling, but I haven't done any real bugling with them. So I can buy one or the other, but not both. I realize that elknut is the main man around here, so i hope i don't offend or get flamed for asking the question but I'd like to hear pros and cons about each one. I'm ready to pull the trigger anytime so I can start practicing for this September while I'm driving to work So has anyone used both? What do you think? What's the size comparison between the two? Easier for a beginner diaphram user? And most important, which one sounds better to you?

I continue to use both on and off and still prefer Elknuts newest tube. It rings out high pitched locate bugles and is light to carry. There are small differences in sound from each tube but you can't go wrong with either.

I had the same question. I'm going to try the newest Elk nut chuckler.

The Elknut bugle has a bigger opening on the mouth end, and is much easier to use, and not chop off your sound, by your bottom lip contacting the bugle. I am able to get more volume with is as well. Just my opinion>

Both bugles will work on elk & perform the elk sounds you will need to hone in on. It's a matter of preference!. If you do your part with your mouth reeds the bugles will do theirs! (grin) Have a great time out there! (grin)

Thanks man. How does your new chuckler compare in size to the bully bugle? Same weight? Does the bigger mouth opening make a big difference?

The Chuckler is 19" long & the Bully Bull is near 22" & weighs a few more ounces. Both sound good. The 1-1/4" opening does make a difference in controlling ones bugles this is why the larger opening but not too large, it's just right. Rockie also came out with a bugle with the larger mouth opening because it is better, I believe it is still a couple inches longer too.

Nice thing about the Chuckler that I like is I can add wraps on the barrel under the camo skirt between the two exposed tone dampeners, this allows you to sound coarser with the amount of wraps you like to have in your personal sounding bugle tube. I add two more separate wraps to my barrel, it sounds very good! Thanks!

The amount of different wraps can have your bugle sound differently than your hunter partners, this is another way to sound like different bulls.

I have both. I bought the older model bully bull when it came out and had to modify the opening to make it bigger. Went with the Chuckler last year and like the fit at the opening much more. Helps me when I'm trying to get a lip bawl/scream. I'll be carrying the Chuckler until I lose it on the mountain side. Which has happened before...

Elknut - What do you use to apply the wraps the tube?

Mike, black hockey tape with 3 wraps or rubber splicing tape used to waterproof electrical wiring works great too, if you use that only 2 wraps is needed. About an inch away from each other or so will give you a deeper base like tone. Various wraps in different locations on the bugle can change the tones on any bugle. I like my wraps on the main part of the barrel most! Have fun with it! (grin)
