Shoot or No Shot 2016, Episode #2.

It's rifle season, 2016 in (insert mountain elk state here) and is the 4th day of your 7 day hunt. You've gotten into elk each of the days you've been out but no clear shot has surfaced yet. You possess an antlerless tag (no antlered elk may be taken during this hunt). These three elk seem to stop for just a moment on the bench trail you've been watching since daylight. When they continue down the trail 20 yards farther in the direction they're facing, it drops down and you will not have a chance at bringing an elk home for dinner this beautiful fall day. Shoot or no shot for you here? If you say shoot, follow the instructions below so we know which one you've chosen and where your 165 GR projective will punch through. Shoot or no shot?

If you say "shoot", save the picture to your desktop and open in MS Paint, you'll be able to place a spot, X, or whatever on the critter before you save it back to a jpg and add the marked up pic with your post.

Ditto what Swede says unless there is some law that you can't shoot collared animals.If so, and if they are fairly close,put one behind the ear of the cow that has it's head down

If.... "IF" I really had my head on straight that fine day in the elk woods (fat chance of that), I may wait a few more seconds and shoot the cow coming out from behind that pine and poke her where I put the yellow star with my .308. I don't think the round would ricochet at the angle shown on that lead collared cow (risking hitting the bull) but who needs that mess of having to turn in the collar and all Now if it were my pop back in the day, he probably would have shot the collared cow in the head (he had a strange thing about shooting critters in the head to avoid spoiling an ounce of meat)......

Back in the day, that was a sign of a true marksman and a hunter who was cool under pressure. I hunted that way for awhile. That is until I saw the lower jaw on a big buck drop like it was connected to a broken hinge after my shot. Never again. That picture still haunts me.

How far are we talking for the shot? I have actually had a bullet that has gone into an animal, hit a rib, and ricochet sideways and exit. And that was with a heavier bullet than a 165gr. That experience would be a concern for me so if the elk are as close as they appear, I'd potentially opt for the head shot.
