Anything you would alter on this plan.

Postby js80138 » 11 09, 2015 •  [Post 1]

So we head out tomorrow for 4th rifle. My plan is to be dressed and in the truck by 4 am. The ride to our area should take a little over an hour so make it 5:15. Hike to the ridge is approximately 1 1/2 miles. My idea was to headlamp it to our ridge and glass the trees when light was available. This should put us in the area I want to focus by first legal light. Now the forecast is calling for 90% chance of snow with 3-5 inches Tuesday night and Wed morning, ending somewhere around 8 am. Should the forecast change my timeline or spot and stalk plan?

All the Best,

Jimmy

I'm thrilled RE the forecast for opening morning of 4th season-new tracking snow! Every track you see will be a fresh track, and game should be out feeding when snow subsides. They are easier to spot on snow than in dry cover. You don't really have to spot elk, you can just spot tracks and stalk. When I'm on fresh tracks I'm keeping the wind in my favor and staying on the uphill side far enough above the tracks that I may see them first if they are looking back. Cow calling may be in order. If elk are walking slowly you can get ahead of them and ambush, @ a saddle or opening. Good luck! I'll be after them starting Wednesday as well.

Elkduds thanks for the reply I spent some time on the map planning my ambush opportunities. I will follow up after my hunt with a full detail report. This will be my fifth year of 4th rifle in the same unit and after the archery season weather this snow storm couldn't come at a better time. Looking forward to putting forth the effort that will be required. Good Luck to you as well.
