Almost a Disaster

After giving my lawn a haircut and doing a bit of weedeating yesterday afternoon, I walked into my garage to drink some water. It was then I walked by my medium size upright freezer and thought it sounded a bit louder than normal. At the same moment, I noticed the door was a jar about 1/2 inch and there was a small pool of red on the concrete floor in the front . It seems that Mrs. Phantom had inadvertently cracked the freezer door open a few days before when she leaned my dog load ramp against the side of the freezer. After a small panic attack, we relocated all the packaged elk meat from this year's Idaho bull to the inside freezer and an ice packed cooler. The upright freezer was pretty packed with built up ice from the mixture of warm air seeping in through the cracked door and the little freezer trying to keep the temp down so I had to defrost it on the spot (in the driveway). There were a few packs of steaks on the top shelf, close to the cracked door, that had more than partially unthawed and had dripped down onto some of the other steaks, roasts, and burger packages. I ended up putting a few packs in gallon zip locks that had been hit by some of the steak runoff, reloaded the cleaned up freezer, and avoided a huge disaster. Another day and it would have been very bad and meat would have been lost. I'm putting a little latch on the freezer door so this never happens again.

I know that feeling of panic
When our daughters were young we kept otter pops in the freezer,.. about the 3rd time in one summer I found the freezer door ajar all otter pops had to be in the fridge freezer.
We ate a lot of meat that had been on the door

I put a gate lock hasp on mine so it can't be knocked open cheap insurance also

Good stuff here. I would cry like a baby if my Elk meat spoiled!
