New Guy Intro

Postby Ridge Runner 76 » 09 24, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Just a quick intro. Not sure how I missed this site for so many years. Anyways, I'm a CO native and like the rest of you, I'm an elkoholic that refuses any cure. My dad got me hooked on hunting at age 8, and I quickly became an elk addict. At this point I'm a rifle hunter as I'm getting as much time as I can with my dad who will be hanging up the hunting coat in the next year or so. As well, I'm taking my daughters on their 1st big game hunts this fall, and as strange as it seems, I personally won't be hunting elk this year. My only hunt is for a 2nd season buck tag that we burned almost a decade's worth of Pref. Points for. That's a whole other story. Once I get back, its 3rd season buck tags for my daughters, and then 4th season either sex elk tags. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any leftover tags for myself that did not interfere with their hunts. That's ok, as I've got big plans for next year in an area that is a real sleeper.

Thanks for allowing me here. I hope I can contribute.

Hey, welcome aboard! Looks like you have some great plans there with the family! Good luck to you folks! Nothing wrong with rifle hunting for sure, I enjoy picking it up once in a while myself especially on those Nov. Mule Deer hunts! Good luck to you!

Welcome 2 U, sir. Where in the Centennial state do you call home, and where (generally) do you hunt?

Thanks Elknut1 and Elkduds.

Elkduds,

I was born and raised just south of CO Springs in the Fountain/Widefield area. Still have alot of family in the Springs area. Moved up here to my present home in 1993, and I now call Fort Collins home.

As to where I hunt, I've spent vast majority of my time in 55,551,66,67,68,681. Just depends on how we draw out on tags from year to year. We all prefer the 1st rifle season if possible.

How about yourself?

Last 5 years, CO Springs w hunting in 8, 85, 82, 581. Fruita before that, 40, 521, 60, 61, 42, 421, 471, 53, 54, 55, 67, 62, 10, 21, 22, 23, a few others many years ago. Thanks for asking. We seem to have been in a few of the same units, not to mention Newport of the Rockies (original nickname for CO Springs area). Many relatives of mine are in Loveland. That's what led me to 8.

Yes sir, looks like we've been in a few of the same places.

As to Unit 8(and surrounding units), not sure what your experiences have been, but mine have been really hot and cold. The biggest issue I have with 7/8 and such, is its crazy crowded on the weekends and the vast majority of folks are not even hunting. Nothing wrong with that, but sure is hard to get away from people and to get into the elk. However, there are some big bulls in there.

Loveland is a nice city and man is it growing. Shame that Bass Pro pulled out though.

My daughters deer tags are for 191/9/19 and the Walden area for elk. Going be fun to see some new to me country on their elk hunt. I've only hunted in the general area 1 day over 15 years ago. That was south of Highway 14 over near Owl Mountain and Old Teller City.

Thanks.

You are in a excellent place to learn. I've read most of the archives, several of these guys top tier. I've learned a ton as well.
