rainy day tactics

Today I decided to sit at a wallow I found, the wallow is just below tree line in a great. All was quiet until about 10 when I felt the first of many rain drops to come. They seemed to come and go lightly for about an hour before really picking up intensity. Next thing I know the heavens open up, wind gets howling, rain is increasing to big drops and now there is a bit of snow mixed in followed by several lightning strikes. I have been near someone who took a direct hit above tree line and will not risk such situations.. once I hear lightning popping I get off the mountain, if I can't get off I get as low as I can. Please be lightning smart people, last thing we need is to deal with an emergency situation on the mountain.
With that said I am not afraid to stay out and get rained or snowed on.
I decided that with the lightning today, I needed to get down away from this wallow and into safer terrain. Once I cleared the burn line(thats what I call the point where the trees all seem to have lightning marks on them) it would be a good chance to work on my still hunting, a skill that I developed hunting mule deer. I find that it is my next favorite way to hunt just below spot and stalk. (every successful still hunt turns into a spot and stalk at some point!!!) I decided that since the rain had made everything soft, and since the rain would be helping my scent stay down I would go into wraithe mode.
I have been so focused on calling in elk that I forgot how much I enjoy just silently becoming the forest. I did not see any elk today, but did come across some mule deer. None of this heard had the maturity and size I am looking for be it male or female. After a few hours of slipping through a known bedding area I decided to call it a day and go home as my feet were fairly wet at that point.

Hunting elk in Sept is all about calling for us, we locate them by sound then hunt them, rain, snow or shine! If rains get too heavy & look like an all day affair we move out, we don't care for lightning either! (grin) We do not slip through bedding areas in hopes of getting lucky unless we know for a fact the elk are there by sight or sound but generally calling gets the nod, it's much better odds when the elk are the ones in search mode over us moving around their homeland, there's places for both hunting styles & that's what can make it exciting! (grin) Good luck!
