T minus 24 hours CO GMU 54 here i come. my first solo DIY elk hunt. i just finially just got the OK from work to be gone for 2 weeks. im super excited and stoked. alot of people i know (especially my buddy that backed out on me 2 weeks ago) thinks im stupid and crazy for going solo. but there has been a few people on here and a couple other forums that have been great help and encouraging me to go solo. Plus i have God to guide and protect me. so whats there to worry about..... What part of 54 are you going. 4 of us are leaving Thursday headed that way from Louisiana. We will be hunting 6.5 miles up east soap creek. Keying in on soap basin and the east side of the east soap creek.

I say go for it. I'm solo in unit 53 right near you this year. As long as you are prepared it will be the experience of a lifetime. One thing I suggest is using a spot messenger or the delorme inreach unit. I use an InReach which gives me piece of mind and allows me to communicate to the outside world.

I've hunted 55, 54, 53 and 521 and have been all over the area since I live nearby, do it, you won't regret it. Another suggestion is definitely pack your rain gear. We've had an abnormally wet summer this year and it rained quite a bit yesterday. Have fun and good luck!

truely undecided actually lol. ive been thinking about heading to the castles, not for sure yet or not. or possibly the beaver creek area.

yea it is definitely is going to be an experience of a lifetime. i cant wait. yea i picked up a Delorme inreach over the weekend. giving my wife a little piece of mind. and me too for the safety factor. do you have any sugestions for where to go in 54. i have been planning going around the castles. then someone told me to look into the beaver creek area.. i got a good pair of rain gear packed away and ready to go. thanks for the heads up and suport. saw about 50 head of elk off the eastern flanks of red mountain this evening in unit 54, another area to look at which isn't in designated wilderness.

Im sure your buddy had good reason to back out on you because I don't know anyone that would give up a week or two in elk country. That being said it sounds like your buddy is the one you should be talking to if he has been out there before, the last thing you want to do is loose a good hunting buddy that has great contacts in the outdoor world, besides that just including him with hunt planning on your DIY solo hunt could be beneficial on your part and his part, even though he can't make the trip he can still be part of yours! My buddy did have a good reason to back out. with the events that happened with him just prior to him backing out i totally understand. and i dont blame him at all. matter of fact if the rolls were reversed i would have done the samething. and i know it was probably one of the hardest things he had to do. i should have included him in my planning. and your right the last thing i ever want to do is lose a great hunting buddy and friend. especially one like him that would bend over backwards for just about anyone.

How did everyone's trip go? I am heading out there in 2 weeks for first rifle. Can you point me out to any areas of alot of activity or how entering on the eastside looks?

This is my first time going elk hunting and I plan to backpack about 5 miles in towards Costa Lake. Is it pretty easy to park and enter off of 730?
