Post em Up, Elk Sounds 2015 - Cow/Calf

Post up your cow/calf sounds. It's a great way to practice, and, get some constructive feedback from some pretty darn good callers and hunters. I am very rusty with my cow/calf noises but I'll start this show off with a brand spanking new reed. Let's keep this thread to cow/calf sounds and we'll move on to other elk noises soon. Whos' next

Okay, here goes a quick try, 1st time so have a healthy laugh! Started w/ the closer mouth reed and then the primos 'maka da bull crazy' external reed call.

Luckyman, I was able to open it up. Im a big fan of the 'maka da bulls crazy' call. I use it sparingly and mixed in with my other cow calls.
I would try not to drag out the cow sounds as far. The eeeeoooo the 'ooo' part of it. Sounds good overall. (with the diaphragm)
Ill try to record some tonight and post them up.

I was trying to find time to record some sounds last night, but my 3yo was taking all my time and attention. I did catch a clip of him doing his thing on a external reed.

Phantom, I like your calf chirps on that thing. Nice and short, high, and crisp. That's something I struggle with.

Luckyman, I would second Brent's suggesting about shortening up the tail end of the diaphragm mews in the first part of the file. I like the diaphragm mews towards the tail end of that portion, and think they will get the job done. I'd bet $ some elk will come check out your external reed calls.

Alright . . . here's my file. Guess I better put one up since I put my 3yo out as the front man. Not trying to do any particular calling setup I would use in the woods, rather, I structured it from low intensity chirps, up through lost calls, and ending with buzzes, the highest intensity. There are a few things in the file that I want to do different. Some areas I know need cleanup and better control. But I don't want to call out what I think is wrong, as I want to hear all y'alls uninfluenced take on where improvement could be made. The wife and I both have a spike tag, and a cow tag (four tags between us), so I really am interested in dialing in my cow/calf talk in the next two months. I only used a mellow yellow in this track.

Lucky, sounds like you're keeping your tongue pretty high and tight on that reed creating mostly what sounds like calf sounds. You may want to try playing around with dropping your tongue a bit and working on a "lower" sound/note which is what I call the cowey rasp. Lowering your tongue and dropping your jaw bit may help get you some lower/raspier cow sounds. I made a soundcloud clip a while back talking about it... I'll see if I can find it. RJ

Hi all. New to posting here. I'm from SW CO and live for the Elk woods. Here's me practicing out in trees with my daughter recording. I've got some heavily wooded property so I like to get out about 60 yds from the recording device so I know what I'll sound like when it really counts.

Thanks for the tip, I think I get what you're saying. I keep listening to "sounds of the elK" herd talk track and they seemed short and high pitched, probably mostly calves?

Sounds good to my ears! I might think there was an excited herd over there if I heard in the woods what I heard in the headphones. I'll have to try the recording from a distance.

Luckyman: I know some will advocate using one's mouth to manipulate the sound, while others do not. I try to maintain still lips, but do let my jaw drop a bit to adjust the pitch. Joel Turner, has a nice little clip on youtube. Have you seen this one?
