Nebraska Elk Permit deadline is this week

Postby CurlyTail » 06 22, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Although the permits are limited, the Elk are huge and the success rate is high. Limited to residents and landowner non-residents. Apply for permits through June 26. Get your permit in if you qualify! There is also a SuperTag lottery that includes an Elk permit open to non-residents.

What Permit Name is best to apply for? Looks like there are about 15 different areas you can apply for? Do you apply for them all? Or are there a couple areas you apply for? Or can you only apply for one?
I am a Nebraska Resident and Landowner. Thanks for any feedback.

You have to apply to one specific elk zone. It is such a limited hunt that they are all excellent so pick the one you would like to explore. I applied for Box Elder unit since it is close to my home in North Platte. Everything is private land so my understanding is that if you are lucky enough to get a permit, you call the game warden in that area and he puts you on the elk and gives you a list of landowners who have elk on their place. Most landowners do not appreciate the elk and are willing to let hunters have access although many do charge a tresspass fee. In the box elder unit, I have heard that many will only charge you a fee if you actually harvest an elk on their place. I have heard the amount of 1000.00 mentioned. Most bull elk in Nebraska will be massive by Western standards since they are protected, fully mature, and corn fed. I believe you are limited to one Nebraska Bull elk permit in a lifetime.

Check out this picture of a friend of mine who drew the Box Elder unit. This elk was 400+ inches and weighed 1100lbs!

Can you accumulate preference points for elk tags? If so do you have to actually purchase a PPoint, or do you automatically get one once you enter the draw for elk tag each year?

They just started giving preference points last year. You cannot purchase just a point. You apply for the permit, then get a point if you do not draw. I think it is 9.50 to apply, and 150.00 if you draw.
