Call sequence for CO OTC 2nd rifle elk?

I've stopped bringing calls the last several years, but think, I'll resume this year, in an effort to locate bulls. I'm going to order the elknut package. What is the most imp call(s) I can use to locate a bull? I'm thinking my repertoire should just be 1 or 2 calls, one being some kind of bugle. I'm not asking what physical call to bring, but rather, what is the exact sound I should make.
I think I remember elknut1 saying, if there's one call to make during later rifle seasons, it would be the lipscream bugle? Or bawl? I can't remember.

The Bugle sound you are referring to is the Location Bugle! Your best bet for the time frame you are elk hunting is the ElkNut 5 DVD & the ElkNut PlayBook. Consider those two & you will be well on your way! Keep things simple & you will do well.

Ha Ha, yes that would be a lot! No bugle weighs a pound! It's the shipping weight! The bugle in all weighs 6 oz! You're good to go besides the new one will not have an XTR version this year! Thanks!

It's true it's not smart to call in an area where it's known other hunters may be within earshot. This is why hunters need to be selective in their spots to call. I like calling from 2 hours or so before daylight all the way up to daylight time. When a return bugle is heard you are most assured it's a bull & not a human. Too, when calling after daylight I look for quick responses to my believable location bugle. Again, I call in areas where there are most likely no hunters! What I listen for is a response inside 30 seconds, this generally means it's a bull as most hunters cannot return a bugle much quicker than this because they are getting their bugles out or their mouth reeds out to call back, this takes time, so inside 30 seconds means bull in most cases. Just food for thought!

There aren't many places where elk are bugling in rifle season. I know of 2 where they do for sure although I don't know why. But even there I let the elk do the talking. In my opinion bugling where the elk are not is like saying "I am a hunter and you should run and hide"

Joe when these rifle seasons fall into Oct. the bulls can respond back for sure. I've been on many rifle elk hunts on OTC units. Last year I was out again at that time & bulls would respond back no problem! In 3 days we heard more than 10 bulls call back. At that time you are not trying to call elk to you, you just need a direction or the area they responded from as a rifle hunter. Get away from the busier trail systems & boon dock in away from crowds, this does not generally need to be over an hours hike in.

I believe you do not hear bulls bugling because you do not bugle enough or not at all. (grin) You have to fire bulls up at this time, don't think bulls will always ignite on their own. Once a response is received stop your calling & get in their area fast! We can call bulls everyear in Oct. I'm sure you & others can do the same when the spot & time is right. I wouldn't dream of leaving the bugle behind, it's our bread & butter, guys just need to know how & when to use it!

I've gone first rifle in CO most years for the last 25 years and heard bulging every time. ....in recent years I've started going 2nd rifle, and the bugling has been downright spotty, and I'm going to the same area...maybe about 50% of the trips I hear bugling. This is OTC CO. So it can and does happen.
