Ok so now that I got you looking I want to bring this subject up again. Will you par take? ( viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4845 ) I am writing an article about the subject. When I brought up the discussion before here it got a lot of people typing and expressing their feelings about the subject. I am giving away an ON X Map for your smart phone and also a Primos Video if I can get 500 responses. I think the subject brings passion to the forums and social media and I enjoy sparking conversation and debate. So what do you say Will you partake in Smoking the wacky tobacco? Ha Ha James, can't help you here! (grin) I'm one of those snobs that feel a hunter must be in full control of his faculties when in the woods with other hunters! I don't personally want to hunt with anyone or where ones may be where their alertness & judgement makings may be impaired! (grin) I know it's legal in many states now but they should come with a few safety restrictions! Just my .02.

I agree even as a consumer that it doesn't have its place while actually hunting. But afterwards is another story. One of the poster on my give away had a really good response before the thread was fully removed. Why it was removed is still a mystery... Here is what I was able to grab before it was pulled though. Mark wrote : "So do all of you that say no marijuana in the field drink coffee or take any kind of prescription medication while hunting? Both of those items are also drugs. Like I said, I don't personally smoke but let's not get it twisted, there's a lot of undue stigma attached to marijuana because of governmental propaganda. I'm not a tin foil hat kinda guy at all, but there are so many strains and so much information available today, it's possible for someone to smoke to relieve themselves of body pain without any affect mentally I say if you trust the guys you hunt, and you have seen them be responsible after smoking in the field, let them do what they want. The guys I hunt with who smoke regularly in the field are far safer than a lot of people I've ran across hunting on public land that don't seem impaired by any substance. They just seem dumb and dangerous. It's unfair to say "anyone who smokes in the filed is irresponsible or more dangerous than someone who doesn't"

What are your thoughts on what this man is saying?

Comparing coffee to marijuana or most prescription drugs is pretty laughable, at best. I honestly can't take anybody who makes that comparison seriously. Smoking and hunting is no different than drinking and hunting, and combining intoxicating substances and weapons is just a bad idea, period. Marijuana inhibits cognitive ability. Does that mean that there is no such thing as a high functioning smoker? No, the same as there are plenty of high functioning alcoholics and pill heads, but that doesn't make the behavior acceptable. There are people that are likely safer drivers, even when smashed out of their gourds, than many people on the road; does that make their behavior acceptable? Some prescription drugs fall into that same category - I don't think its appropriate to be hopped on percs or oxys while handling weapons either. But seriously, comparing coffee drinking and gramps taking his high blood pressure meds to smoking...geez.

Shane,
Is someone who drinks one or two beers intoxicated? It can be the same with weed. One hit doesn't make someone smashed. I agree that people who are drunk or people who are baked don't have a place in the woods or around weapons. But as someone who is researching this topic I can tell you that a toke off a pipe doesn't alter your presence. I will also point out that many different strains carry very little THC. That's the part of weed that gets you high and alters your state. They can have very different levels of CBD's which is the pain relieving aspect to MJ. So whats the difference between taking a hand full of aspirin and taking one or two hits of weed? I am not trying to convince you of anything other then real facts. As I have stated before there is no place for drugs or alcohol while hunting. But what about after a long day of hunting? Would you rather relieve your pain with a natural resource or something that has many side effects? With more and more states legalizing weed. It's only a matter of time before it's legal nationwide. This is a real concern for many state wildlife officers and departments. Better to be informed and educated then be a camel with their heads in the sand. The reason that MJ has the stigmas that it has is because of propaganda. Until there is real research done people are left to believe rumors and lies. I for one want to know what affects it has on me personally and how it affects my body the fallowing day and so on. I appreciate your honest opinion.

As far as I'm concerned people can fill their boots with whatever they like once the weapons are put away, but in the post you made above the guy was directly referencing people being safe WHILE hunting after smoking - that's where my problem lies. 1 beer is too many and 1 puff is too many when weapons are involved, in my opinion. I'm not nearly as concerned about the end of the day when the weapons are secured and everyone is in for the night (so long as they aren't getting so drunk and/or stoned that they are a wreck the next day).

I lean heavily toward live-and-let-live, with plenty of notches in my been-there-done-that belt. I'm aware of lots of people who get relief from medical problems from MJ, and don't see it as any worse than alcohol in social settings, probably better. Before or during hunting? Definitely not. Not only is it a safety issue, CPW's rule prohibits "hunting under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances." Here in CO, MJ is a very controlled substance. I've seen hunters intoxicated on prescription pain or anxiety medications, IMO that is not okay either.

Elkdud you bring up a good point. Most states that I know of don't allow alcohol or drugs to be used via hunting. Mostly what I am talking about here is not the use of MJ while hunting but rather it being allowed in camp say sitting around the fire at days in. Yes MJ is illegal on Federal land as of right now but what if that changed? Would it change peoples opinion about it if it was allowed every just like beer? I am not trying to convince people to use it. More to trying to help rid the poor stigmas that surround it... That's all. Thank you for insight and opinion on the subject.

James, I hear your side with an open mind. I too respect the fact that you are not trying to sway anyone here or other places to see it used in an illegal setting. If it's legal I would not be offended in camp after the hunt if someone lit it up no more than alcohol being consumed which is also legal. Not saying I'd like it but by the same token I would not make an issue over it. Maybe the guy smoking wouldn't like the idea of me making a cocktail either, ha ha, if it's legal who am I to play camp police! (grin) As long as folks are balanced about what's being drank or smoked we'd all get along just fine! Good subject, I'll bet many of us will face this in our hunting camps at one time or another in the future & possibly without our knowing about it, so nice to see it come up & give it some thought now & not be shaken to the point of over stepping our emotional boundaries! Thanks!

I glanced at that Facebook post. Not long ago there was a Bowsite thread on the same subject. BUT... both of them had a similar problem. The original question was "what are your thoughts on the legalization of marijuana" But the comments all said the same thing "I don't approve of people hunting while under the influence" Obviously alcohol is legal but hunting, driving etc while under the influence is not. The reason is because doing those things under the influence can have affects on other people's lives. But that was NOT the question.

So as far as what people do with their lives I'm with Elkduds: Live and let live. To each his or her own. As long as it doesn't affect me/us right? I hope you agree.

This world has enough people who think they need to control what other people do. We call them the government!!!

I guess I could add that I cannot stand cigarettes! Outside please. Those things smell worse than the wacky weed.

After having someone drunk plant a bullet 3 ft over my head instead of in a Mulie in the Jemez NM, I swore I wouldn't hunt close to anyone who drank and gave up my Boilermaker habit. My Best Friend got killed on Lizard Head S of Telluride in 1972 due to PTSD, Wine and Marijuana and driving 100 MPH up. Came down at Terminal velocity and stopped suddenly at the bottom. I won't get near it. Just MHO Seabees 1968-69 Vietnam

I am surprised Paul lets this thread stand. there were threads in the past involving politics and religion that got whacked with posts that this was an elk hunting forum only.

Why? Does this subject not pertain to elk hunting? We talk about broad heads, tuning, shooting, habitat, blah blah blah. The legalization of weed and elk hunting is just another topic that weather or not you like it, the two are going to collide and is something that we all need to be aware of. Not that weed in the woods is new just because its now legal in a handful of states. I get that it may not be something you are interested in which is totally fair. But why should it be pulled down?

I get that because its been illegal for many many many years there are a lot of guys and gals who think "awww shucks its a drug and drugs are bad, So you hippies go hug trees let us hunters do our thing"

But reality is that more and more people are turning to alternative medications for their ELK HUNTING problems. From sore mussels to anxiety and beyond. It certainly has its place in some camps. I am bring attention and hopefully someday questions about its use. This is a thread that allows people to express their interactions with it as well as express their feelings related to it. If you don't want to participate in the discussion then thats ok. But I can tell you that a lot of people are interested in it. I can prove this point as well. My original post " WILL YOU PARTAKE" got 57 post which is almost double of any other post that is not pinned to the top. People are passionate about it one way or another and are willing to talk about. Weather that be bad or good it stimulates conversation and that brings attention to it and thats my goal. The more its discussed the greater the chance that a lot of the lies and propaganda behind it can be dispelled...
I suppose that when the compound bow was first introduced there were lots of guys that laughed and said "oh that piece of Sh*t will never work and its a waste of time to talk about it. Having an open mind.

I will leave you with this :

“All censorships exist to prevent anyone from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently, the first condition of progress is the removal of censorship.”

Passin thru, welcome sir X3!!

easeup, the reason I've not shunned this topic is because it's neither political or religious! It's use is completely legal in several states including the one our thread starter started! This isn't a question on whether it should be legal or not or that would be political. James is asking opinions on it since we all have one! (grin) Many have shared their thoughts & no one including James is condoning its use while hunting no more than any of us condone drinking & hunting. I have no problem with it here in the Elk Forum!

I think a big aspect of politics and religion is they tend to lean toward people judging each other as people. Inevitably there is negativity and people's feelings get hurt.

I realize that the whole marijuana thing is new to a lot of people. But we should remember that at one point in our history we had an alcohol prohibition and there were surely people who viewed alcohol as evil and people who used it as criminals... not to be trusted.

Looking at that and the evolution of alcohol consumption in this country I don't think it's hard to imagine that we can have a system that is regulated complete with penalties for misuse and abuse that will work. But again... the key is not to judge others for things they choose to do as long as it doesn't affect us.
