Oregon Elk hunting

Postby NickZag » 02 18, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and elk hunting. My father and I are looking into hunting elk in Oregon and I don't have much money to pay for a guided hunt and plan on doing this on my own. I've been researching the Suislaw area and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in this area and if so if they won't mind sharing some information on some good spots. If you don't recommend the Suislaw NF, is another area of Oregon that you would recommend? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Nick, glad to have you on board. I don't know much about hunting the fine state of Oregon but we have a few folks here from the Beaver state so hopefully, they'll chime in. I'd definitely start with the ODFW website and start doing your research now (harvest statistics/success rates, seasons, license application fees/deadlines to apply, legal animals allowed for the type of weapon you and your pop will be using, access considerations, etc.). Once you've got an area or three under the microscope, call the NF biologist and the USFS Ranger Station... you'll be surprised at what you'll find out just by asking a few questions. There's a thread or two in the archived tips here that'll help you with remote area scouting from your computer at home. Once you two lock down the W's (when, where, what), then see if you can plan a road trip this summer to do a little camping/scouting in the area/areas you've decided on. Good luck on your adventure, sounds like a great one! RJ

Sorry I can't give you any detail for over there. But as a long time outfitter I'll give you one suggestion. Look up some Oregon outfitters. See what kind of elk are on their websites. Remember that they are sbowing off the best animals they kill. But that's not important. Pay more attention to where they are hunting. think like a satellite bull and hunt the outskirts of the areas where they are.

Your location cracked me up dude... Commiefornia

Never been to that area, my hunting partner and I concentrate on the saddle mountain unit in the NW corner of the state. It is a 3pt or better, cow, or calf, and it is about 30 min from the house
