what do you think of holding multiple species tags?

on a hunt, do you think it is advantageous or not to have tags for multiple game animals?

for example. January AZ deer hunt. for a mere $100, i can put a Javalina tag in my pocket as well. i never do, because i want to focus my time and energy on finding a deer (any legal deer). i rarely see javalina at my deer spot. but i know where they are, and it involves a truck ride.

but is it good insurance just in case a javalina goes trotting by?

what are your thoughts? say for a Elk + Deer hunt..too much?

I never do, because I want to focus on elk....and I travel far at significant cost. ..and I'm on solo DIY backpack hunt...and nonres tags are costly ...don't want my elk hunt to stop when I get a deer/bear/cat....plus I rarely see anything but elk. Depends on how important javelina is to you. Elk are WAY more important than other to me, not even close. So, how important is javelina to you?

Alwaya have a cougar tag. Ill interrupt any hunt to tag a cat. If im elk hunting a deer or bear would have to be a real beast for me to take the shot but i keep the option open by carrying tags. May as well have the choice, you dont have to do it just because the tag is in your pocket but why not give yourself the option if you can?

Here in Colorado the archery deer season runs along with the archery Elk season. Most years, I will buy an OTC Elk E/S tag and apply for a deer E/S tag. I always seem to run into deer when I am elk hunting. I can at least pop a doe the first couple of days the season. I find that it keeps my moral up if I'm not getting into elk until later in the season. Getting that 1st animal of the season always seems to lift the spirits.

Last month i helped out a couple friends by showing them my main whitetail area. I told the one before hand to make sure he brings a cougar tag. Well his cheap ass didnt get one. Day one he gets a nice buck. Day two hes out with his brother and he has no rifle cause he had no tag left for anything. Well he was about 200 yards from his brother glassing and had to sit and watch a cougar as the cat sat and watched his oblivious brother for a half hour from 70 yards off. Coug is still out there killing deer. Thats what happens when you dont leave all the options open.

if we are talking an elk hunt - NO.
I travel long and far with high expense to try and tag an elk. the other tag is a loss of thought and focus on elk.
Now this is based upon experience from SW CO where I rarely see a muley when hunting elk.ButI have had some bear I could have taken if there was only a tag in my pocket.

A lot of the Elk zones I hunt here in Idaho have concurrent seasons, so I carry a collection of tags. My focus still stays on Elk, but if I get a great opportunity on a Buck, Bear, Wolf, Mtn Lion, coyote, or cross fox, I will take it. I like to take advantage of my time in the field when given the choice.

For those traveling from out of state, I can see where the economics get ugly fast with the cost of tags but I can see the argument to keep some options open if it's your home area. I've never carried a cat or bear tag but I may just do that this coming year. I probably won't bother with deer tag for my elk area because I have some really nice Muleys right on my property and I know I can fill the freezer from home with a doe. I live in an area of overpopulation so I can get multiple doe tags. I seriously hope I can draw a buck tag for my property next year because we have a couple of really nice ones that cruise through on a regular basis.

Sure! This seems VERY simple. If its affordable and you'd like to shoot said "other species", than get a tag. I myself like to have a tag for whatever I run into.

Good points on the resident/nonresident and affordability aspect. Before I lived in a Rocky mountain state, I would hunt out of state yearly and it was more of a mission to fill the expensive tag as opposed to a hunt

Best way to keep bears out of camp is to have a bear tag. I am an Idaho resident and with our sportsmans license I get tags for just about everything.
