Partner Communication

Seriously, what methods have you found successfull to communicate with your partner while in the heat of elk battle. There are times when partners can guess what the other is doing/saying by the sounds they are making, or, not making and/or their movements and speed or direction of movement. That comes after many outings and familiarization with a partner. There are also many times when visible hand signals or body language can speak volumes to each other..... A few pinches of your fingers together tells partner to continue cow talk, acting like you're lifting a tube to the sky signals bugle, the same motion with moving the pretend tube up and down may signal the caller to chuckle, swirling finger in the air means wind is shifting, two fingers to your eyeballs and a point in a direction means eyes on/I see him, a hand on the head with your fingers stuck in the air shows that you see a bull, a finger to your nose signals you smell elk, etc., etc. What are some of the way you cats have communicated with your partner while hunting elk?

That is easy for me. The best thing about haven a deaf hunting partner. Is he can read lips
I can tell him what going on silently and he points or some kind of hand gestures back I just hope it's not the finger.

bow up (vertical in hand) = I see him.
bow down (horizontal) - I don't see him
hand flat and still - don't make a sound

I snuck up to a ridge that i knew a couple friends were hunting the other side of last month. When i got to tge top and looked down to the east side i saw one of them laid out prone glassing with his binos and his rifle set up on his pack. I did a big slow wave and got his attention. Turns out he was trying to put another point on a buck to make it legal. We had phone service and he was able to walk me in to the buck via text message. It was about 300 yards south of me and 75 yards downhill. Texting is not the best but we had service and it worked. I was able to get within 50 yards of the buck without spooking him and confirm that it was a 3x3 (not legal) he had apparently been watching it for an hour trying to put browtines on it.

Question, and not trying to get anybody in trouble, I just really have no idea.
Are there any rules or laws in the western states regarding hunting with radios? When we went to Kansas turkey hunting, I remember there being regulations against using two way radios while turkey hunting. Any rules like that that anybody knows about in the elk states?

Yes sir, illegal in MT (they actually spell it out in regs; no two-way radio/cell phone communication to hunt or avoid game check stations). Legal in both Washington and Idaho.

I think you can use it to say "I'm heading that way, see you in camp"

it says "The rule does not prohibit the possession or use of two way communication for safety or other legitimate purposes"

Just not to "hunt" meaning, in their words "pursue, shoot, wound, kill, chase, lure, possess, or capture"

If you look on page 13 under Motion Tracking or Camera devices the angle is using dedvices to find the location of animals or relay information on a game animals location.

I think the limitations on electronic communication is meant to be the same.

Good summation Joe.. I think you're on the mark as usual. "Come in Rambo, this is Red Leader.....Nice bull heading up little Marten Creek draw.. I see him on the far hillside across from my position heading due west right below the timberline..... should be to your location in 5 minutes, possible showing in the small clearcut below the old tree stand saddle" is probably, to the letter of the law, illlegal . I doubt if anybody is sitting behind me checking to see what I say on the radio though... Wait... did I say that out loud?

Um... is that for real? I know where Marten Creek is. You'd be sitting somewhere near Galena or Swamp Creek to say that! I guess I know a few spots. Lyn "Clip-Shot" knows those spots I bet.
