WY Elk, Whose Applying This Year?

I'm starting to think seriously of applying with the max points I have this year! WY is a state I'd love to hunt before I get to old to so effectively! I think this is the year to start, heck I still may not draw!

How about folks here, whose putting in & with how many points?

You know me Paul... putting in for the Special Elk, getting my license and keeping my points. Might be burning them in 2016 though. It'll be nice paying half of what the special costs when I do burn those points.

2015 will be quite the year for me. I'll be 50 so I decided to treat myself to something that has been on my bucket list for at least 10 years. Next September I'll be flying into north central Alaska for moose. The place I'm hunting has a solid history of cranking out lots of 60 inch plus bulls. It hasn't been hunted for 6 years. Two weeks after I get back it's off to Wyoming. Excited is an understatement.

my dad has max points, I'm one point behind max. We will put in again as a party. I don't expect us to draw as I am one point behind (I was a resident and then moved thus I started point collection one year late) but we will try.

I left the WYO points race after getting to know my general area. We've filled every tag we've bought for wy and last season friend killed a 365. I'm afraid I might be taking a step back going to a high pt draw unit without the same knowledge

me and my buddies all got a point last year, so we are hoping to draw a general tag and do our very first elk hunt...no idea when or where...im sure we will start game planning after whitetail chasing is over...im super pumped just thinking about it

A true testament to how good hunting is in the general units of Wyoming. I know guys who have seen and killed 380 bulls! And you are so right Will... is a good tag really better than one in an area you know like the back of your hand? Maybe not. But since the Cowboy State lets me get the general license AND rack up points I do it. Yes it costs me more money but one day I'll burn those points and when I do I'll make sure I know enough about where I'm going to make it worthwhile.

I don't apply for Wy., because as a nonresident they don't allow me to hunt in wilderness areas without a either a resident, or a guide. I have 10 points in Az., and I hope to draw a good tag this year.

Twinkie.... there is so much national forest who needs wilderness? I know of a special situation where the area is actually designated as a "wilderness study area" and non res hunters can hunt there. Chainsaws are permitted too. Pretty cool because lots of NR hunters aren't aware we can go there. If you could hunt wilderness where would you go? I have a good friend in Jackson and we talk about hunting the Gros Ventre. Big bulls. Big griz too though!

I have always wanted to get up there to hunt elk, it is just a long drive with the horses.
and I haven't got a clue where to unload. maybe IS has another little crease in the hills somewhere.

Ok...I thought I had this figured out, but I guess I am still confused. Me and my 3 partners, all of which have 1 point, are planning on going after a general tag for next fall. I know everyone with a point last year received a general tag, so I am hoping for the best. Is there a way for us to not burn our PP and still get the general? Just doesn't seem likely to work like that...

Also, what about cow tags? I seem to be getting conflicting info on them as well, we would honestly like to go in with 2 any elk tags and maybe 2 cow only so not everyone has to burn the points but I have yet to talk this up with the others.

And I was unaware that AZ is a PP type system as well....man, it feels like I have spent a week of research on this stuff and am still dumb as a bag of rocks

Every cow only tag that I know of is NOT for the same season. In other words they are for late season hunts after the regular bow and gun seasons.

First of all not everyone with 1 point draws a "Regular" General license. Your odds are about 67%. It takes 2 points to guarantee it.

Yes, you can get a "Special" General license, guaranteed, and keep your points. But that tag costs roughly double at a little over $1000. To keep your points you need to select it as your 2nd choice. By not drawing your first choice you keep your points... and gain one. So for your 1st choice license you select a tag that is impossible to draw. But just in case I make sure I pick one that I actually want and know where to use it.

I should mention that I actually hate telling people that anymore because more and more people keep realizing that and as a result last year the Special was NOT guaranteed for the first time ever. I think the odds went down to like 98%.

Won't be applying for elk, but will be applying for antelope, both the wife and I have 4 points, she will hopefully draw, I'm waiting a year or two, too use my points, I do need too start getting deer points, I'd rather buy 2 elk tags here than go out of state right at the moment.....

The 2014 Special GEN as a 2nd choice was 100%, by over 600 tags.
2013 was right at 700.
