2015 Elk Hunt, Montana...Advice Needed

Wife and I are tentatively planning a week (or so) long trip to do the "loop" in the Dakota's, WY and MT...

She wants to do the typical sight-seeing, but I want to get myself into the hills and get a chance at an elk...I am hailing from Kentucky so I know I would need a non-res license and permit, but I am working with very limited time and I know this can be a problem.

Few questions...do I even give myself a chance just doing a day with an outfitter (most of these guys spend a week or least a weekend don't they)? What is the average cost, is transporting a bow via air a problem, any other useful info or tips?

Thank you all...def. a dream opp to get out there, just need to see if it is even a possibility cost-wise and logistically speaking.

Just me, I would not spend the out of state fee knowing you have only 1 even 3 day in the woods. Not sure what Montana tags is but I think $800 - $900 bucks. Elk hunting is a good one to have on you bucket list. Find some buddy's at home or on elknut, make a trip out of it for 2016 you won't regret it.

Fridaythe13th isn't being a downer. He's giving you good advice. I have done one guided hunt and it was for 5 days and that was pretty short. Montana elk tags are a little over $800 for non-resident. I love elk hunting and spend a lot of my expendable income on the hobby and I wouldn't buy that tag for a 1-3 day hunt. However, not everyone is in the same place financially so it may be worth it to you? Any outfitter is going to need to sell enough hunts to justify their cause, so you may end up paying an outfitter for more days than you are hunting in a situation like that. If you want to hunt a couple days, you may have to book and pay for a full week. Otherwise, the outfitter is better off just booking someone else for that week. Good luck.

This is exactly the type of advice (and exactly kind of what I was figuring) when I posted this out there...

I was just hoping there may be a needle in a haystack chance of getting on a good full day hunt, maybe 2 days if I can talk the ole' boss into it, and see the sights and also fulfill a dream at the same time...asking a lot I know...an elk hunt out of state like that isn't something to take lightly.
