Trail camera pictures

I was going through some of my trail camera pictures from last year and thought some of you guys might like to see this.











I've had some people say that's a coyote, and others say it's a juvenile wolf. The one coming up over the hill in the last one definitely looks like a wolf though.

Wow, very cool, looks like a coyote to me but distance from it to the camera can shed pounds for sure? I'll stick with coyote!

I agree with that pesky dog being a coyote.. Very, very awesome footage from that Simmons Trail cam. Thanks for sharing it!

I have seen coyotes and elk in close proximity on several occasions. Interesting there is a spike in the first picture and on two pictures, just before the coyote showed back up. That would be really odd if that is the same spike and the coyote ran him back. Who knows.

Cool sequence. I agree the one coming over the hill looks like the adult and the ones chasing across the meadow are the juveniles. The confident stance and smaller looking ears seems like Wolf to me. Also the way they are hunting seems like a more coordinated effort. They singled out the spike and pushed him to the Adult. Coyotes hunt more side by side, flushing rodents to each other. The long tail looks like coyote though.

I showed these pictures to a guy who worked with and around wolves on research projects for several years, and he was pretty certain it was a young wolf, too.

I know that the area's in the country can cause animals to change quite a bit, ie, the difference in sizes and color phases between a Texas coyote, and a North Dakota coyote, but I have killed and trapped more coyotes than I can number, and I have never seen a coyote like that, especially in the very last picture. Our coyotes in KS are not that big in the body or the head. I had 3 coyotes come right in front of me in CO last year, pretty high up (11,500'), and they were much more "petite" than any of the dogs you have pictured here. I'm not saying that it is a wolf, but I would err on the side of saying they are not coyotes, definitely not the one cresting the hill.

I looks to be wolves to me as well. We have some trail picts that have a young wolf coming through everyone we showed the first picture said it was a coyote as well, until we showed them the next series of pictures where it was not only one but then 2,3,4,5 and then the adults came through. All within a 2 minute window, now they all changed there minds and said I did not know they look so different from pup stage to adult. Yep I think if you only saw a pup in a flash most would think coyote.

It just looks like a well fed wolf pup to me.

where I hunt in Oregon, wolves are not "recognized" to be there, thus I would say coyote and shoot!

A lot of whitetail (one very nice buck), and some turkey on this camera, but no more elk. I did get some later on on another camera nearby. Some cows and a rag horn. I got the sense when I was scouting this mountain that elk had been using this and a few other nearby meadows earlier in the season, and had since moved to areas with better cover. I sure expected better hunting on this mountain given the amount of sign. I did have 2 close encounters with what I believe was this same herd at the tail end of bow season. The first time I had no shot, and the second time I could not close the distance, and I think he caught the wind on me.

I live in Colorado so I can't claim to have observed a lot of wolves, but there is one piece of evidence in this sequence that makes it clear, in my opinion, that those are not coyotes. Elk are not afraid of coyotes and they don't run from them. I have seen single cows chase off coyotes numerous times, but I have never seen a group, or even a single adult elk run from a coyote.
