Can't See my Pins? Halo Effect Problem?

Postby ElkNut1 » 06 28, 2014 •  [Post 1]

OK, since I received great advice & help on my peep sight issue I thought I'd address my next issue that bugs me to no end & my accuracy is suffering because of it. My eyes are not what they used to be & so at full draw my 3 pins are either giving off a large halo effect where in many situations all 3 pins blend together & I'm struggling telling them apart at 30yds & over. My question is, is there anything I can paint my light gathering MT Gold Ascent pins with that could eliminate this issue where I could basically see a distinguishable dot or pin? If I could I'm sure placing a dot on my intended spot on the target would resolve my flyers! (grin) Any solutions for tired eyes in Idaho!

Paul, I don't know if this will help you but I just had a verifier peep installed and it made a world of difference for me.

+1^^^ most shops have them in a demo stick. I think there are 9 different levels or so. You can hold the stick up and look through each one to see what will work for you. The only problem may be a smaller peep and the ability to shoot in low light conditions. Go to a shop and check them out.

Is the verifier a magnifier of sorts with varying levels of magnification? I guess like 2X - 3X etc.? Not sure how it works? Thanks.

Couple questions- things to consider:
What size pins are you using? (too big or too small- size matters)
Are they too bright, causing the halo? (compare to another sight from different manufacturer)

I would choose the clarifier as a last resort.

Love my verifier peep. Had same problem as you. No magnification, just clears things up, different strength lens to fit your eye. I use the #6 which is a pretty common one.

Verifier will work but it is a lens that actually goes in your peep site. If it is raining or snowing you may have trouble seeing through it clearly. If its cold out and you breathe on it going to fog up.They can be a problem for hunting.

Try putting black electrical tape over the housing where the fibers are contained to cut the amount of light getting to the pins.

Thank You! Are you guys saying the "verifier" fits into a peep that I already have on my string? (meta peep)

jmez, I like your suggestion! I will try to block some light out first to see if it will reduce the halo or sunburst effect, great idea, thanks!

It won't fit in the one you have. You have to get a special peep from a company specialty archery. They sell a special peep housing that a lens screws into.

I was battling the same issue with my yellow and red pin. I recently switched to the "String Splitter" peep and problem solved! Definitely worth checking out for those with halo issues.

Been shooting with a lens in my peep for 3 yrs. Took the lens out today and shot a basketball size group at 60 yds with a very fuzzy pin. Put the lens back in and shot a baseball size group with a clear pin. STart with the lowest power lens they make--it doesnt take much to clear up your pins--I've tried the stronger power lenses and they made my pins clear but the target fuzzy. I carry q tips to keep the lens clean while hunting. I've tried .019 and .029 pins with a longer sight bar and always go back to the lens in the peep. I only need glasses to read. Hope this helps.

That might be part of the problem right there, check out some bigger pins.
For me, I've had problems seeing .10 pins at full draw. I use .19 pins now but as my eyes worsen I may go to .29.
Depending on location of the sun, I've had problems seeing my pins just like you are having. The brighter the pin, the more the halo effect as well.

Wow, you guys have given me a lot to think about! I feel my eyes are bad enough at the close distances that the halo effect would happen with about any sized pin, it may be time for the glass as suggested by many, thanks!

I had .29 pins installed and it made it worse because my pins are so close together at 20 and 30 yds,
if you get the verifier stay with the lowest magnification I went with a 7 and I will have to get a 4
pins are really clear but target a little blurry. Good Luck

bigmart, I think the lowest one is a 5, I will have to look into it & find a place where I can check them out so I get the right one for me. At present I use a 3 pin sight & they all seem to blend together at all distances, but further out the worst it gets! (grin) I will definitely be looking at getting one as I did cover up quite a bit of the clear light gathering plastic around my sight with little benefit. I don't like hunting in the rain anyway! (grin) Thanks!

A couple things to think about Paul. One idea you might try would be a single pin set up. You can use a Montana Black Gold Ascent sight that has 3 pins and slides. (I thought you may have this sight already). You can take out the 2 bottom pins to try out a single pin to see if it clears things up for you. As others have said go with a larger pin like a .029".

If you want to keep a multi pin set up you can get the pins in graduating sizes. This might help differentiate one pin from another and also helps to have a better sight picture at your longer distances. I use a .019 pin at 20 and 30 and a .029 pin at 40. You may be able to get a .009 for 20, .019 for .030 and a .029 for 40. (I am not certain if MBG has .009 pins or not.)

And the verifier is also an options as others have stated although I do not have any experience with them. I am not sure about Idahos rules on verifiers. I think as long as it is not a magnifier it would be fine. But I do not like the idea of having condensation and other issues keeping the glass from being clear.

paul. sorry i only scanned the advice above me..dont know if anyone mentioned this.

are all the colors haloing? i've read that people halo on some colors and not others. there is one guy at the range that has all red pins because of it. that would confuse the krap out of me..but he makes it work awesomely.

what about experimenting? put some blue painters tape on the sight partially blocking off the fiber optics..dimmng them a little at a time. see what helps or doesnt help. my gut tells me, .19 pins will fix your problem.

Thanks for the additional help guys! I should mention that I also have a sight with .19 pins & they are just as blurry as the .10, All colors are equally bad, nothing stands out as better than another. I did try cutting the light gathering down a bit at a time but no cigar! (grin) It didn't help! I really believe I need the Verifier to aid my sight issue, problem is which one??? 5-6-7-8-9-??? I need to find a place that carries them so I can aid my needs! I'd sure love to be able to see a pin & target clearly again!

As bad as it is right now to see a little rain isn't going to hurt anything! (grin) I think the lens will benefit my issue on a much higher percentage rate than the few times it may rain or I breathe on it accidentally. I need to give it a shot & experiment a bit & see how it pans out, thanks!

Given that information I would say is time for an eye exam, then a clarifier lens. ;)

Lol! I know my eyes aren't the best but I did just try something new! By the way, you guys are super for really trying to help me out here, the response & PM's have been overwhelming, thanks so much for your input! This is why Forums like this are truly necessary!

OK, I went out for the 1st time ever with my 1.50 glasses on that I generally only use for reading as I have no issues after 3'-4' away. I went to 45yds & drilled two shots dead center with both arrows touching! Wow! I haven't done that in the longest time, I was impressed & the pin clarity & the ease of putting the pin right on the target spot, man I love this Energy Elite! (grin)

With this in mind guys would the Verifier work in my situation provided I get the one that is for the 1.50 glasses comparison? Thanks again!

mjm, no cataracts but welcome to the forum sir!

Paul, Yes, I have shot with my 1.75 glasses and can see great, the verifier dose the same thing, they make them from .,04 to .09.
I would not go over a .05 for clarity on both ends, I will be buying .05 this week instead of the .07 I purchased.
Let us know how it works for you.

I have used verifier for 3 years now and not once ever had a "fog" issue. I remember using both the #5 and #6 but for me the #6 was a little better without target getting blurry. I use 2.5 reading glasses.

Paul the peep with the lens are color coded for power, there is a clearifier and verifier depending on your specific eye issue, I have many friends who hunt them without issue! specialty archery make the peep but you definitely need to get to a shop that stocks them to find which one you need!

Daniel, I wish I could look through them 1st but the nearest shop is 110 miles away, we live in a smaller Idaho town away from everything! I did read up on the Site you mentioned & it shows that I need the Verifier not the Clarifier. It shows this as I'm one that sees distance great but not the 1st 4'. Anyway I will go with the 5 feeling it's the size I need! Thank you for your thoughts!

I believe Specialty sells a kit that has several different lenses in a package deal. Probably would be better off doing that so you can get the one that works best.

You can also contact them. Very helpful. I contacted them over the winter about some pin issues.

you should hit up Danny at Archery Central..... tell him Matt sent you.... :D

anyway, would a single pin be better?, I use a Black Gold single pin, when i'm elk hunting I set it on 25 yards and leave it, if there 35 aim high, if there 15 pretty much just aim right on... works great... and if you get into a little less cover you can always move it up if you need too.... just a suggestion...

I did make but to no avail! The shops I went to did not have the chart to look through, they had the Verifiers but no way to tell for sure which one I needed? I'm making some calls this morning to find what I all need? I now see you have to purchase separate pieces to complete the whole peep sight unit, weird they don't just sell exactly what you need as a new individual? We need a Sponsor that carries these products, they would do well here!

Well I bit the bullet & ordered 2 Verifiers! I picked up the # 5 & #6 along with the non hooded peep. I should be good to go with both lenses, I'm ready with # 6 in case my eyes get a bit worse as I get older! (grin) I talked with Cheryl at Specialty Archery & she was very helpful in helping me make the correct decision. If any need assistance in this area as I did you may want to contact them, it was great service! Thanks for everyone here that helped me out with some great guidance, it's appreciated!

If anyone has the halo or starburst effect going on with their pins on the target like I was then you seriously need to check these things out! I'm very impressed! I'm using the non hooded peep & the # 5 Verifier but also have the # 6 in case my eyes get a bit worse in time!
