Got Snakes?

Do you have to contend with venomous snakes where you elk hunt?

Yup. Haven't seen or heard any in the wild, but last year found a 3' dead rattler in the road about a 1/2 mile from camp in central Wy.

There is, but have not seen any boy that is my phobia of life. All snakes.
I was turkey hunt once this little 6" snake come crawling through the leaves. I moved real fast to the other side of the field. I think it was one of them Minnesota Anaconda's looking for breakfast.

I have them where I hunt mule deer on occasion but not elk. They are usually quick to leave the area when I encounter them but it is a little spooky crawling face first on the ground. I try to use my bow as a sweeper in front of me when I am stalking that way.

Where I hunt the snakes are all below 5000 feet elevation. It seems they know their place and I know mine. We get along great.

Not where I hunt elk but I tend to see them a lot working out here in the patch around oil batteries or when I'm bird hunting..... I got in trouble about a month ago for killing one then coiling it up next to a valve where another driver was going to get a load

Growing up in NM, I've been around quite a few rattlers. My brother shot a little bull a couple years back in one of the lesser gila units (lower elevation, pinon juniper country). We tracked the bull and eventually lost blood after about 4 tenths of a mile. We fanned out and looked the rest of the day. We knew the meat was long gone, but went back the next day looking for birds. It was middle of the day and 90 degrees. We were pretty frustrated and busting through brush when I came about 3 or 4 steps from a pissed off rattler. I ran right through my brother (who was right behind me) and let him collect my bow and the arrows that fell out of the quiver.

Unfortunately yes. I stepped over one, almost stepped on one, and saw another making a stalk. In 7 days hunting last year....needless to say I spend a lot of time watching where I walk.. And carry a venom kit. Not that it would do much good cause I would probly go because of a heart attack from being bit...

Was up at about 6000' in S-Cal deer hunting. I had just parked my jeep at the trailhead and thought I'd take a leak. Took care of business and started to zip up and heard a noise like leaves moving on the ground. Right at my feet was a Southern Pacific about 5 feet long. He slowly moved right next to my feet and slowly moved away. This was a day hunt, so, I got back in the jeep and hunted another day...can't stand snakes!

In some of the lower elevation areas I hunt their are snakes, but a majority of the time I hunt higher so I don't seem to run into any except small water snakes.

Ive seen 5 rattlers in my life. two scouting for elk, three while archery elk hunting.
Last September I picked out a nice flat rock to glass from , and the snake let me know it was his rock

Few where I use to hunt in Utah. Only one scared me was a little thing, not sure if it was just too young or what but didn't have a rattle so by the time I realized what it was I was ontop of it and it was ticked.

Yup hear in New Mexico, the rattlers are pretty common. One year, in a blind, preseason scouting, there was a rattler curled up inside waiting for me! Scared the crap out of me, was scared to go in that blind in the dark. I'm such a sissy when it comes to snakes!

Never seen a poisinous one while elk hunting in the motains were we hunt....Im sure if I went down to the lower areas were more shrubs and sage I might see a few...I hate snakes so I will stay up high.

They are quite common in northwest Colorado. Mostly at the lower elevations, but I have seen them as high as 8,000 feet. You have to watch were you put your feet. It gets kind of spooky, but you learn to keep your eyes open.

We have a lot of bull snakes in colorado that folk mistake for rattlers

We have them. Some idiot who has a few hundred acres bordering my elk spot even caught a few dozen last year on his property and released them where I hunt. What a great guy huh?
