What Broadheads

What broadheads does everyone use? Which do you all prefer for elk, fixed or mechanical? Which brand?
I'm just looking to get a little input on what everyone uses. Thanks in advance.

Muzzy, 3 blade, 100 grain. They work great and fly great with my system.

Mechanicals are illegal in Oregon, but I wouldn't use them on elk even if legal. Have heard of far to many horror stories and have seen them not work first hand (old hunting buddy) when hunting in Another state.

Paul, lots of very good quality elk heads on the market today & yes everyone has their favorites. We've taken elk with so many different ones & basically all did their intended purpose as long as we did our part! At present I really like the Viper Trick 125grn by Slick Trick, they are a great head & tough as nails, they are one of the sharpest heads out of the package that I've seen in many years! I use steel force sabertooth 125 gr . I tried rage one year out west but they would open up while stalking up on the elk. I just trust a fixed blade more! I know as long as you put it in the right spot it doesn't matter what you use but I like the simplicity of a fixed blade. Murphy's law always comes into play while elk hunting.

I am currently using Muzzy 125gr and have no problems with them. They fly great and hit the same as my field points but I really like the look of those Viper Tricks.

I have always used Thunderhead. They have probably killed more big game than any other head on the market. I will also be looking at a new set up this year as I only have a grab bag of mismatched arrows and different grain heads that make them all fly the same... It really does not matter which head you use as long as it flies good out of your bow. They WILL all fly different.

I will be using Slick Trick Vipertrick 125's this year. I like 125 grain bh's as they are usually a little beefier than the 100's, and a little more FOC is good for penetration and arrow flight. Thunderheads are great as SwampBuck mentioned. I know they have their fans, but I wouldn't use an expandable on elk, even if they were legal as stringunner mentioned. The trick is getting your arrow/broad head/bow all tuned for the best flight=penetration.

I have been using slick trick magnum 125's for the past 5 years or so (but have not hunted elk), but I have heard really good things about the NAP killzone, I just dont know how they would perform on elk sized game. The 2" cutting diameter seems like it would seriously limit penetration on a big bull elk.

The Slick Tricks will do the job. Just my opinion, but I would not use an expandable on elk. I know guys do it and are successful, it's just not for me.

NAP Thunderhead user here too. 100 grain. My brother discovered them and told me about them when I was looking for a fixed-blade. Initially, I got them because of the outstanding price. You get 5 or 6 for what other brands charge for a 3-pack. Admittedly, they aren't the sharpest out of the box, but I don't mind a little elbow grease. The very first fixed broadheads I used were the Slick Trick Magnums. They flew great at 20 yards, but I had problems with them 30 and beyond . I was a fairly new shooter at the time though, so it very well could've been a technique issue. Anyone have flight problems with a 4-blade, 3 fletch arrow configuration or do you guys find they shoot just fine? I've heard this can pose an issue, but I don't know if that is for real.

Magnus stingers: great fliers, great penetration, simple, easy to sharpen, lifetime guarentee. Every couple years I send a few in and get shiny brand new replacements at no cost.

I tried a couple of different brands but the Montec G5 was the most accurate out of my bow. I also heard a lot of good things about them.

I really think two things have a huge impact on broad head flight. One is tuning your bow/arrow combination. Tuning takes a little playing around, but once you have it you maximize accuracy, penetration, and speed. If you are not tuned, your arrow will not hit straight on, especially with broad heads. Secondly, spinning your arrows to make sure they spin true. If you don't have an arrow spinner, just put your bh tipped arrow on the handles of two coffee cups and spin, watch for wobble.

I used the NAP hellrazors 100grn last year and they worked the best with my set up. This year I'm going to set up some toxic bbroadheads for my new bow.

I like 100gr. thunderheads, a lot of good broadheads out there. I like well made broadheads that spin perfect and are very sharp. I`ve been using them off and on mostly on for over twenty years. I still love playing around with different broadheads but just at the end the day, back with thunderheads.

I still use the Muzzy 130gr 4 blade. If I had to switch the only new broadhead I shot and liked would be 125gr G5 Montec. But I am still shooting XX75s.

I use 100 gr. fixed blade sharp broadheads. I make sure they are well made and will not break easily or come apart. I have several brands.
