I drew NM area 16a! I've been putting in for three years and finally got it! I'm hunting with southwest outfitters with Pete Davis. Has anyone hunted in this area? Man I am so pumped and my wife and kids could care less! I figured at least you guys would be excited for me. Lol

Man I'm so pumped! I haven't ever used an outfitter so just that will be awesome other than I don't get to do my own calling. This is a once in a life time hunt for me , I can't believe I got a tag! now I'm going to have to ramp up on my shooting and working out. I've been doing both since January but I just want to make sure I'm ready. I'm sure I'm going to drive my wife crazy talking about this hunt.come on September lol

This was the third year I put in for there. This should have been the four year but on the 2nd year the outfitter had a mixup and only put me in for AZ. How many years did it take your son to draw?

No I haven't. I did hunt 16b a couple years ago. I camped in 16a and hiked in each morning. The terrain doesn't come close to the terrain I hunt in CO. Now that being said, it can be very rugged and you'll work if you plan on being on the move. A lot of small mountains 1 after another. This is how 16b was. I know a couple guys who have hunted 16a and were into bulls daily.

That's an outstanding unit. Which hunt did you draw? I've never looked at the non-res draw odds, but the resident draw odds are about 1 in 7, so count your lucky stars. We hunted the third hunt last year and it was by far the funnest I've ever been on. I'd send you a PM but I don't think I can as I just left lurker status. That country is in pretty good shape right now, pretty good feed so those horns should be growing pretty quick (some of it was burned in the Whitewater/Baldy fire 2 years ago). It's a pretty large unit, so there is just about every sort of country possible. Lots of folks go as high as possible and go right past all the bulls hanging out in the pinon/juniper.

I drew the 9/11 to 9/18 hunt. To me that doesn't give you a lot of time to find the elk! When I go to MT I hunt for two full weeks. Some years I find them right away and others it might take 3-4 days to find them. I just hope it's not one of those really hot weeks where they don't move that much during the day. That's another reason why I hunt for two weeks just in case Mother Nature not doing me any favors.
